It's been 30 years. If the school were to change the name back, confusion would start all over again. Winning is the answer to building an identity, attracting recruits, getting attention and donations. No one is telling UTEP that changing back to Texas Western will result in another championship. No one is telling UIC to change its name back to University of Illinois at Chicago Circle to get more recruits. As Al Davis would say, "Just win, baby!!" Non-sequitur. UTEP and UIC haven’t had 30 years of confusion. Both moved to simpler, more distinctive names that moved them away from hyphenation, not toward it. UIC didn’t surrender a name that had at least some recognition. Their new names didn’t have connotations of a branch campus or small women’s college, and didn’t incorporate the name of an actual school known as a women’s college. It’s not easy to find an example of such a rebranding failure as that of University of Detroit athletics to Detroit Mercy. They should study it at the business school.

The confusion would end instantly. We already had an identity. The rebranding is the creation of the confusion. The name The University of Detroit does not sound like a hospital or a nursing school.

I just tuned into the Lady Titans at George Mason to kill time waiting for the men’s game to start. The ESPN announcer described us as Detroit Mercer. NCT you are way off there is no confusion!😩

From Clemson’s message board this afternoon: “I thought Detroit Mercy was a hospital.”

I don't think there is any doubt about that! I still have some shirts with the new logo "D" that was in and out before most fans even knew it existed. A few athletes have the letter jacket that no one would recognize today. All the planning, marketing and work for the logo and the marketing of "Detroit's College Team" was swept away to oblivion with the Board decision to emphasize Mercy and mandate it on all uniforms.

I have a couple of items with the D logo, including a button that I keep pinned to my gym bag. I liked that logo.

Interesting branding on this item in the Calihan Hall gift shop. “Detroit Mercy” on the shield logo in tiny lettering, but old school “University of Detroit” sewn on with larger letters dominates. $60. I might even buy this.
