View AttachmentInteresting branding on this item in the Calihan Hall gift shop. “Detroit Mercy” on the shield logo in tiny lettering, but old school “University of Detroit” sewn on with larger letters dominates. $60. I might even buy this. That's new.

Trust me, Vwls doesn't like our name. NC Titan doesn't like our name but is more resigned than others to it. Vwls is not NC Titan and NC Titan is not Vwls and they don't even look alike. Me, I don't care anymore. I call us "U of D" around town and always will and when I'm away from the Detroit Area on business/vacation I call us "Detroit". If someone looks confused, I explain that we merged with Mercy College, an all-girls school in Detroit in the 90s.

This sweatshirt is the epitome of what a disaster our university branding is. There’s really nothing comparable in the landscape of higher education as far as I know. I get that the sweatshirt is a nice gesture to older alumni that like things the was they once were, but having this in our actual gift shop does nothing but perpetuate the confusion. This is evidenced by the fact that many younger alumni and current students still refer to the school as U of D. I know people have referenced Memphis selling merchandise with the older name of the institution, but unfortunately we are not Memphis and we have a major branding problem.
I received a good education at UDM. Made some good friends. Have always enjoyed watching the basketball team. But the rebrand and the lack of the university to make it work (or revert back) is seriously embarrassing. I’m unusual in that I have 4 college alma maters. I avoid mentioning Detroit Mercy at all costs if someone asks where I went to school because I’m sick of the confusion and having to explain.

The MGM tourney page refers to us as “Detroit.” As if the rebrand fail isn’t bad enough, our games in this tourney are being played at a High Scjool. mgmresortsmainevent.com/

At least our guys have experience playing in high school gyms. Having Oakland in the HL is finally paying off. I wonder how they plan on painting the new college 3 point line on the Ed Clark HS court? I’m guessing duct tape.

I was looking at the school’s game notes today for the upcoming MGM tournament. At the bottom of the first page there is a narrative section concerning the University’s brand under the heading “Please call us Detroit Mercy — Titans.” Immediately beneath that (forming the bottom page border in large letters) is the image “DetroitTitans.com.” detroittitans.com/documents/2019/11/22//MBB_notes_vs_UC_Irvine.pdf?sfns=mo

I mean .... wow. If it were not my alma mater I’d find it rather hilarious. So sad. And, like you said, it is IMMEDIATELY beneath that disclaimer. Just so bad and beyond embarrassing.

I asked a University official a couple years ago why the school’s general web address (www.udmercy.com) and the one specific to athletics (www.detroittitans.com) were inconsistent with the new “Detroit Mercy” brand and the response was essentially that it would take close to an insurmountable amount of work to change these to the obvious brand-consistent alternatives. The University of the Incarnate Word recently rebranded to “UIW” for athletics and I was curious if they somehow found a way to transition to a brand-consistent web address. They did, it’s www.uiwcardinals.com. So I guess it can be done — if there’s a will, there’s a way.

For what it’s worth, if you want to know how to refer to Monday’s opponent, here’s some official guidance from that institution: Name: University of Louisiana at Lafayette® Academic Abbreviation: UL Lafayette Athletics Nickname: Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns® Athletics Shortened Names: Louisiana, Ragin' Cajuns, and Cajuns Athletics Abbreviation: LA (for score/stats listings only) Athletics Nickname Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns® is the nickname of the University’s athletic teams. Teams also may be referred to as Louisiana, Ragin' Cajuns, or Cajuns. In most cases, Ragin’ Cajuns plural is proper, though Ragin’ Cajun in the singular form can apply. ————- The University’s branding is supported by two fundamental truths: - Consistency builds awareness. - Repetition reinforces recognition. Consistency and repetition are powerful together. They’re why you think of Nike® when you see only its swoosh. When you hear “Like a good neighbor,” you think State Farm®. The Office of Communications and Marketing has the primary responsibility for managing the University’s brand. But every person with ties to UL Lafayette contributes to how our University is perceived. It’s imperative that we all refer to the University in the same way – all the time – in words and images. Any variation dilutes the strength of our brand. So, we must speak with one voice. This brand guide is a tool that can help us convey a united image. It can’t cover every circumstance. But it provides standards for the most common uses of the University’s name and logos, such as apparel and printed material. And it covers simple procedures that will enable you to maintain those standards. Together, we can promote and protect our University’s identity. ————- (The school’s athletics website is: ragincajuns.com/ )

Branding Note: The Live Stats page for yesterday's game used abbreviations for the teams involved. Louisiana was listed as LRC, presumably for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. We were listed as DEM.

Here's a congratulatory one from after the win on Sunday Well, we were known as Detroit College as recent as 1911, I’m guessing that’s responsible for getting the name confused.
