I see this guy had a no hitter last night - I wonder if he's also a victim of our failed branding Maybe the reason why Antoine considered BYU so strongly was that Ty Detmer went there.

In the past week we have been called Universityof Detroit, Detroit, and/or U of D by college basketball Twitter account Busting Brackets, national college basketball writer Adam Zagoria, national college basketball writer Jeff Goodman, and one of our Lady Titan signees.
That rebranding effort is really paying off. Worth every penny of that million bucks.

Class of 2026 recruit Dorion Bowen announces his offer from "Detroit University" using the old Detroit Titans logo. I like him already.

My alumni Spiritus magazine Spring 2022 edition arrived in the mail today. There is a cover article on Donald Taylor, incoming President.
Here’s a quote I found interesting: “When you think of Jesuit and Mercy institutions nationally, you think of Marquette, Boston College, Xavier, College of St. Mary, and Georgian Court University, to name a few. We should be at that level.”
He named three Jesuit schools that are pretty much household words in academia and college athletics. He also tried to balance his statement by including two Mercy institutions that are so obscure I had to look them up to see where they were located (Omaha, Nebraska and Lakewood, New Jersey). Coming in at #109, GCU is in the bottom half of the U.S. News rankings of Regional Universities North. CSM is a tiny school, 680 total enrollment.

Notice the subtle (or huge) difference When the rebranding effort happened, all mentions of simply "Detroit Titans" without the M word were banished to purgatory. Fortunately, I still have a good amount of items that have the Detroit Titans logo, some that I bought at the clearance sale they had at Calihan Hall after they went full M word.

Really, who thinks of CSM and GCU on a national level? I'll try not to make too much out of one quote, but that statement is not encouraging.

I think a name change and a well executed branding approach stressing both the Jesuit and Mercy DNA of the school would be great. The problem with “University of Detroit Mercy” is that it obscures the Jesuit component completely, and that is the half with the academic pizazz. I was at a Whole Foods (Birmingham location) a few days ago wearing a tee shirt with a pre-merger University of Detroit seal on front. A lady working there started a conversation with me saying her son just graduated from the school. I asked what he majored in, she seemed confused, turns out her son graduated from UD Jesuit High School. I said I went to U-D before the consolidation in 1990. The lady indicated she was not aware that UDM had any past or current connection with UDJ or the Jesuit order. She thought UDM was affiliated only with the Mercy sisters.

I doubt he thinks that--he's just saying what a new president has to say. He's not going to dis the Mercy Sisters right out of the box.

I've said it before, if I was Catholic and a Jesuit, the way the Jesuit aspect of the school is completely overshadowed by the Mercy side would really tick me off.

I have been regularly getting emails from the campus bookstore inviting me to purchase school gear online; the operation is linked to the University website. Got another one just this morning. The emails originate from the “University of Detroit True Spirit Shop.”

Either something is happening under the surface and a name change is coming, or our new president got the name of his institution wrong with the newspaper and UDM staff are completely incompetent. if I had to bet, I’d put my money on the latter. But I’m hoping for the former.

I know posting these recurring branding issues on this long thread (23-pages!) may seem like merciless piling on to some, but it helps me to vent. Some day years in the future “message board archeologists” will study these collective posts to help ascertain what caused the University of Detroit Mercy to fade into obscurity.

I’m in the stands at this past Saturday’s Detroit City Football Club game, talking to a friend-of-a-friend sitting next to me. He’s a recently retired physician, lived in Grosse Pte. Farms most of his life. Rogobob: “Would you be interested in joining me at a UD basketball game at Calihan Hall this upcoming season?” Dr: “Is that the ‘Mercy’ school? Do they play basketball?”
