And of course, we really screwed Texas Southern, which now has to start a search mid-way through June--which we all thought was way too late to be ending a search; just lost their star recruit (though admittedly, they only had him for a few days), and may lose other players here late in the season.

That's the true downside of the whole deal. My hope was that there was a member of Davis' staff capable of taking over as head coach who could stay and keep things rolling for TSU. That's a big blow for a program like theirs (or ours) to absorb. As a guy who has been a Texas Southern fan the past several years (I was in the process of picking out my new Texas Southern t-shirt and hat for the coming season when news broke about Davis to U-D), I feel bad for the fans. I hope they get a good hire and maintain their level of excellence in the SWAC.

If you are interested in seeing a Mike Davis coached team in action tune into ESPN Classic right now. They are replaying a matchup from the Great Alaska Shootout in 2001, Coach Davis's Indiana team vs. Tom Crean's Marquette team.

And to close the entire process up (amazing you can hire a coach in such a short time period!!)
Texas Southern will hire Nevada's Johnny Jones as its next head basketball coach, per a source. Former head coach at LSU.

Per online reports, Texas Southern moved quickly to fill their coaching job, and actually got a pretty good one. Johnny Jones, most recently the associate head coach of a very good Nevada team and previously the head coach at North Texas and LSU, is reportedly the choice. Jones had a bunch of twenty win seasons and a couple of NCAA tourney appearances at North Texas, and then took the LSU job. He put together some solid seasons at LSU before a suffering disastrous year five and was fired. Jones is a good coach and will probably do well at Texas Southern. He's the kind of hire that will be a plus when the program tries to hold on to current players and recruits. Kudos to the TSU administration for moving quickly to fill that opening and getting an accomplished, experienced coach. Edit: Kudos to Scout for being the first to break the news here.

Texas Southern's Johnny Jones will retain Shyrone Chatman as an assistant coach. So we know that at least one of Davis's assistants is not making this way North to the D.

Texas Southern's Johnny Jones will retain Shyrone Chatman as an assistant coach. So we know that at least one of Davis's assistants is not making this way North to the D. Probably good for both programs. Jones gets to retain a connection to the recent success and the returning players have someone familiar to connect with. And Shyrone doesn't have to pack up and leave Houston. Meanwhile, Davis has the flexibility to add a coach with Michigan/Midwest ties if he feels he needs that on his staff. Texas Southern really did a nice job identifying and landing a quality coach after Davis left. I am happy for them and excited about the future for our program, as well.

Does this mean Kamron won't be back?

I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Coach Davis last night -- I suspect a few more of you posters may have been at the same event.
He was extremely friendly and came across quite genuine. I was really impressed with his demeanor and his excitement for talking about getting to work to make good things happen with the Titan program. I didn't want to press on specific recruits or players, but he did say he's bringing in 8 new guys and that everyone is going to be working really hard. I liked that.
My first impression after talking with him for a few minutes...he seems like a good, genuine guy who is happy to be a Titan and he's someone we will all get to really like and rally around before too long.

Whoa--8 new guys! So far we know about freshman Davis, TexSo transfer Knight, and juco Holland. It's been reported that he offered HS guard Jamail Pink.
Very interested in seeing this team shape up. I'm still hoping for Damon Harge and Trayvon Reed from TexSo. Who knows, maybe even Trey Jefferson, who can play. I'd love to know more about the Davis/Jefferson relationship.
Davis seems almost the opposite of Bacari. Bacari was all sizzle, but in the end no steak. Hopefully, Davis has the meat.

It was the 31st annual Fr Vincent Welch Memorial Dinner - raises money for UDM Athletics and Loyola HS. It's a great event at the Polish Club and always has a few interesting folks there. This year Jeff Blashill and Frank Tanana were the main honorees. I encourage more and more Titan fans to go next year and support UDM athletics! www.fatherwelch.org/event/
