I think the Baldwin and Bates situations are different. Baldwin didn't jump from school to school, didn't re-reclassify, didn't join a team with a longtime cheater on the staff. Baldwin is hurt. That happens. I don't think the Father did anything wrong. Patrick Jr. missed pretty much his entire senior season due to an ankle injury. I can understand both player and coach being cautious. The big difference I see with Bates and the other situations is that Baldwin, Davis, and McCallum all were actual professional college coaches before they had sons who were college-basketball prospects. Baldwin wasn't a head coach before Milwaukee, but he has a great background as an assistant Point being, none of them needed to look at their son as a golden ticket. Mr. Bates should have followed the lead of Cassius Winston's Dad. I do not see any similarity between PBJ and AB. They are even totally different players. As far as the fathers, Baldwin might be a good guy he just can’t coach. I made the call on Bates almost 3 years ago. Bates probably did a lot of things right when his son was younger but like old garbage he is starting to stink a lot and it might be too late for him to be out at the curb.

Interesting tweet from another head coach ... There's some truth there, but it doesn't tell the whole story. The guy posting that tweet left some things out. Memphis started winning in large part because their schedule got a lot softer, which was right around the time they got some guys back from injury, including their starting point guard. Also, the AAC is way down this year, with Houston being the only "lock" for the tournament right now and Cincinnati and Wichita State having uncharacteristically bad years. Houston has played almost the entire year without two starters who were lost for the season due to injury. Add in UConn having left for the Big East last season and the back half of the league schedule was pretty easy for the Tigers. I'm not saying Bates was having a great year, but I was worried that he might be made the scapegoat for the struggles of the team and I see that it is happening. Also, it's premature to say Memphis has already "punched their ticket" to the NCAA tournament. They are on the right side of the bubble now, but some bid stealers in the big conferences (like Georgetown, Oregon State, and Georgia Tech last season) could leave some teams on the outside looking in. Emoni has struggled this year and I believe his career has been mismanaged, but it's wrong to say that all Memphis needed to do was get rid of him to turn their season around.

Taking Bates means taking in his dad which is program suicide. Unless father Bates has finally figured out that he is damaging his sons future.

UP, since I posted this, I have heard that at least a couple of schools he listed are not recruiting him. If Caleb Hinter and Diabate withdraw from the NBA draft and return to the Wolverines, Michigan won't have an available scholarship.

So Sam, the question would be would you rather see him at Depaul or Eastern? (I presume Depaul just because of the heights he could take Depaul vs what Eastern's ceiling probably is even with him in the fold)

I think if he goes to Eastern Michigan it is going to be a circus with a disappointing end. I think DePaul has a better team infrastructure and would be better equipped to deal with the media attention and the ego of the Dad.

Nice move by Emoni Bates (of the reigning state champs Ypsi Lincoln Railsplitters) to give a mention to EMU for making him an offer. He's not going there (I'm guessing MSU if he goes to college at all), but I am sure they appreciate him tweeting about the program. Notice the pic he used is of Ty Groce, who also went to Ypsilanti Lincoln High School. Through many twists and turns, Emoni ends up at Eastern Michigan University after all. You never know what the future holds. Question: Would you have wanted Emoni to commit to U-D instead of EMU?

He and AD would prove for some excellent press opportunities, the likes we haven't had probably since Ray Jr's run or perhaps the tail end of the RP3 era (i.e. front page of Freep sports section with pictures). And even if it didn't work out, it would definitely draw interest and eye balls to musty, dusty, beloved Calihan. The most crowded I've ever seen Calihan in my lifetime was Emoni's freshman year when they played the State Quarterfinals at Calihan (or was that Soph year?. It wasn't long ago and I've already forgotten except that Calihan was mobbed and my dear ol UD Jesuit Cubs played the game after).

Maybe he and his dad found out that he wasn’t all that they were told he was and he will be a better player because of his experiences last year.

I'm in agreement with you, for the reasons you stated, along with the extra benefit of a guy from my high school playing for my University.
