Aly Khalifa of Charlotte in the portal. 6-11..230…..11ppg..6 rebs…..we played them twice…..what do you think? I heard a report suggesting he was originally headed to Detroit before changing plans and hooking up with Charlotte, so perhaps the Titan staff has some prior connection. But I’m guessing he’s looking to end up at a high major with those stats.

I heard that we had some initial contact with Aly but also that to say he was headed to Detroit Mercy is overstating. He was not a factor in the game when we won, but his improved presence (along with Milicek) cost us the second game (we lost in OT). I'm surprised that he is leaving as the team won the CBI, has a relatively young roster and would seem poised for a better showing next season. But maybe having two 6-foot-11 players has its drawbacks.

Pierre Brooks II announces that he's transferring from Michigan State www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/michigan-state-university/2023/03/29/pierre-brooks-ii-announces-that-hes-transferring-from-michigan-state/70060319007/“The former Mr. Basketball from Detroit Douglass, Brooks saw his playing time steadily decrease in the second half of this season, playing no more than four minutes in each of the last four regular-season games, as well as in the Big Ten tournament loss to Ohio State. Brooks did not play in any of Michigan State’s three NCAA Tournament games. “After a freshman season in which Brooks averaged just 3.7 minutes in 25 games, bigger things were expected as he entered his sophomore season, after dropping weight in the summer, as he entered preseason practices in the best shape of his career. And there were early flashes that things were starting to come together, including back-to-back 15-point games during Michigan State’s trip to Portland for the PK85 Invitational. “He finishes his Michigan State career averaging 2.4 points while shooting 30.6% (26-for-85) from 3-point range. He appeared in 55 games and started five.”

Brooks is the type of player we used to be able to get regularly, but times have changed. In years past a highly ranked high school player who didn't live up to expectations in a high major program would often transfer down a level to make an impact. These days, that player will just as often try another high major program, still hoping to shine on the big stage. Brooks might be going that route.
Also, we aren't the go to destination for Michigan kids transferring back home these days. EMU and Oakland seem to have taken on that role in the state. We need to get that back. Brooks would be a good step in that direction. I would love to see us land him.

Will coach Davis make a pitch for him?

As we have discussed, when it comes to attracting transfers, the Titans don't have as much as many of the programs we are competing against. Our winters are cold, fan support and attendance are lacking, our facilities are outdated, and we've only had one winning season over the past seven. For native Detroit metro kids, we can offer a chance to play near home, but we're competing with Oakland and EMU in that regard. On the plus side, AD has shown that guards can flourish and make a name for themselves in this program and in this league.
One other thing that is in our favor is that some of our recent transfers have really blossomed statistically under Coach Davis. And two of our recent transfers used their seasons here as a springboard to professional basketball after not looking like pros at their previous stops.
Recent examples including the player scoring average at their previous program and what they did in year one with the Titans:
Madut Akec. 2.5 ppg at South Florida, 12.7 ppg at Detroit. Bul Kuol. 5.6 ppg at Cal Baptist, 15.6 ppg at Detroit. Jayden Stone. 3 ppg at Grand Canyon, 13.9 ppg at Detroit. Noah Waterman. 6.1 ppg in his limited year at Niagra. 11.9 ppg at Detroit. Damezi Anderson. 1.3 ppg at Loyola. 9.4 ppg at Detroit. Gerald Liddell. 10 ppp, 6 rpg at Alabama State. 14 ppg, 10 rpg at Detroit. AJ Oliver. 2.6 ppg at Old Dominion, 9.6 ppg at Detroit.
If I was a Titan coach, I'd be emphasizing that with transfer targets. "Our staff knows how to bring out the best in you as a player. We've done it with guards and forwards. You can shine here, too."
It would be nice to point to a lot of wins, great fans, a good conference, etc., but you work with what you got.

I’ve heard Coach Davis make this same point (without all the specifics you include above) during an interview. Hopefully it is part of a PowerPoint or other similar presentation that is included in the pitch we make to potential recruits.

Foster Wonders, the pride of Iron Mountain, is in the transfer portal. The 6-5 guard averaged 2.6 ppg in 24 games for Southern Illinois.

Foster Wonders, the pride of Iron Mountain, is in the transfer portal. The 6-5 guard averaged 2.6 ppg in 24 games for Southern Illinois. Coach doesn't like guys who played at small high schools, but he does like guys who have good shooting percentages, and Wonders fits that bill.
