WOW, that is pretty big news. First, its great for the Detroiters who can/will take advantage of this. It is interesting the offer isn't just for grads of DPS but any school in the city including private schools (like UD Jesuit). In the long term I have no idea how this is funded or if it is even funded (or is Wayne just literally giving away spots at their school for zip?). The release didn't specifically talk about how the financials will fall into place, but still requiring the students to apply for FAFSA probably also helps ensure the kids get any posssible funding based on need first.
How will this ultimately impact UDM and our still stubbornly high sticker price? It's not a positive especially with our smallish undergrad freshman class each year.

If you dig around enough on the Wayne webpage for the program they say it’s funded by them and that it’s last dollar in scholarship cash. So, after a lot of these kids receive Pell grants and/or Michigan Tuition Grants from the state, Wayne eats the rest. Quick math - if a kid receives max Pell and MTG, you’re looking at 9k in aid right there. Wayne has an annual tuition of about 12k. My guess is they are willing to eat the difference knowing some of those kids will sign up for campus housing.
Of course, a decent amount of Wayne’s operating budget comes from the state to begin with. So, arguably, it’s the government pricing out private universities. Unfortunately this is just the beginning. Roughy 195 catholic colleges/universities in the country and I think within a generation most will be gone.
