Sam - do you think that Penny has to prove he can coach the talent he recruits? To date, he seems to have underachieved the expert evaluations of the talent he has recruited and there has been some noise in the background about some the players he has taken; e.g., Wiseman and Bates. Good question. Sorry about the late reply. There will definitely be more pressure and scrutiny on Hardaway. There has been very little criticism so far in Memphis, mostly due to his status as a player there. He's recruited well since he took over, but Memphis hasn't lived up to the hype, especially when you consider that the AAC is not exactly a Power conference. The Tigers have had the top ranked class in the conference every year since Tubby Smith's last class, but the team hasn't reached the NCAA tournament, and they fired Smith for not making the Dance in the two years he was at the helm. In year one of Hardaway he took over a team that had won 21 games and was bringing back all five starters and added the number one ranked class in the country. Hardaway publicly called them a threat to win the national championship, but they went 22-14 and finished fifth in the conference. Plus it was revealed that he gave the family of number one recruit James Wiseman at least 10,000 dollars. The next two years were similar, with high ranked recruits, middle of the pack finishes, and no NCAA tournament. The NCAA case regarding the 10 grand payment and other potential violations is still in process, and with Larry Brown added to the staff I'd bet money that Memphis is probably committing major violations again. We'll see if the NCAA feels like pursuing it. Short answer is yes, Penny has a lot to prove. And this could be a difficult bunch to coach. You've got several guys, vets and newcomers, looking to use this season as a springboard to the NBA.

Cleveland State gets listed as one of the 10: Good to see an HL team make the list. The Vikings deserve it, as they bring back a lot of talent. The article mentioned numerous players as assets, but didn't mention big men Spider Johnson, who averaged 5 and 5, and 7 foot center Major Mabak, a project who should start contributing this season. The Vikings also add 6-8, 300 JUCO center Anderson Mirambeaux. That's a deep team, and we already know they are well coached. Should be some good battles between the Titans and the Vikings.

Maybe if we improve our game we will get an invite to join the Summit.

A lot of Jesuit schools on that list. Pope's Poll will be interesting this year. And another school with a branding change (which I might have missed): LMU, formerly known as Loyola Marymount.

I'll admit to not watching all the comings and goings of all the Summit teams but that would be a pretty unprecedented finish for them up at #14.
It also seems the HL shouldn't be down at 24, there's alot of teams returning alot of talent so on the whole the league should be elevated from recent seasons. I suppose it depends just how bad the bottom of the league is and how much that drags things down.

I hear someone in the Dayton PR department sent them a harsh note making clear that "Dayton is NOT a mid-major!! We made a Final Four once!"
