It's that time! The dark, desolate stretch between the NCAA tournament championship game and opening night in November (the Mean Season, as I call it) is upon us. One of the most useless things in sports journalism are preseason basketball rankings in early April, long before we know all the actual players are who will be transferring and where they will be landing. But it gives us something to talk about and something to keep me from going crazy without college basketball action. With that, here's the Way Too Early Power 36 Rankings from Andy Katz. The link below leads to the article that has the details. 1. UCLA 2. Michigan 3. Baylor 4. Gonzaga 5. Kansas 6. Purdue 7. Ohio State 8. Maryland 9. Villanova 10. Alabama 11. Houston 12. Arkansas 13. The Crossroads Classic, the Indianapolis event that featured Purdue, Indiana, Butler, and Notre Dame, is ending after this season. As a former Indianapolis resident, I am disappointed by that news. It was a boost for the local economy and a chance to see good (usually) teams in action. I'll miss it.

Some non-conference match ups to circle on the calendar for the coming season. That Tennessee vs Texas match up will feature former Longhorn coach Rick Barnes taking on his former team. UCLA vs Gonzaga is a rematch of that exciting tournament game. Hubert Davis gets some tests early at North Carolina.

No Memphis Athlon?? A very odd exclusion given they are now #7 on ESPN. I'm guessing its a matter of their publication going to print before the latest committments and thus rendering them a bit outdated already.

Sam - do you think that Penny has to prove he can coach the talent he recruits? To date, he seems to have underachieved the expert evaluations of the talent he has recruited and there has been some noise in the background about some the players he has taken; e.g., Wiseman and Bates.
