Not sure if most folks are aware, but Mercy College of Detroit had it’s own men’s basketball team prior to the 1990 consolidation with the University of Detroit. I don’t know much about the program other than the fact that the team began playing in 1966. MCD teams were know as the “Crusaders,” presumably referencing those of the medieval period, but perhaps to honor the Joe Sample-led jazz group.
A couple weeks ago I received news that Derek Palms, MCD ‘75, passed away. He was an alumnus of Mercy’s MBB team. It made me think there was no real place currently to post this information on the message board. So I’m starting a thread about aspects of that program, historical details, players, etc., in case folks have something to share.

I wonder if there was a ever a proposal afoot to rebrand as the University of Detroit Mercy “Crusading Titans”?

"They play that street ball, because there're no plays that they know. Street ball, it's the only ball they know."
