I'm surprised there hasnt been a topic on this board regarding the new N.I.L for college athletes. Although the system has been unfair for many years, I'm not sure I like where things are headed. I dont think that Jim Harbaugh should've been making over $8,000,000 a year nor should Saban have a salary of over 9 million, which includes a clause that states he must remain the highest paid coach in all of college football. Neither guy is taking any hits or catching touchdown passes. I wonder what the market is for a player like Antoine Davis? theathletic.com/news/ncaa-approves-interim-nil-policy-for-college-athletes/HSSJIy9wkRMg

Unfortunately, I think this will actually be one more recruiting roadblock for the Titans.

From former Titan Desmond Ferguson: LANSING, MI (July 19, 2021) - For Immediate Release – In an effort to support and celebrate college athletes ability to monetize their success with the use of their name, image, and likeness with the passage of the new NCAA rule, Moneyball Sportswear is working with Detroit-based company Athlytic. A platform that helps brands connect with student athletes using social media analytics as they plan to scale with athletes nationwide. The first athlete that we will be partnering with is Andrel Anthony Jr., through a social media agreement. Moneyball is proud to have made this connection and is excited about this relationship moving forward.

Had to Google Andrel to see who he is, but he's a U of Michigan wide receiver. 247sports.com/player/andrel-anthony-46083713/I imagine that something is in the works for Antoine Davis.

Andrel is a 3/4 star fresh WR from Lansing. Was a mild surprise he chose blue over green. Perhaps Des had connections to the young man from being in the area.
Regardless, NIL is gonna be super interesting to see shake out. Would be interesting in 10 yrs from now what mid major took the most of the NIL opportunity to boost their program.

Lengthy report and analysis from the Detroit Free Press: “Why mid-majors can be big-time players in recruiting under NCAA's new climate” www.freep.com/story/sports/college/2021/07/26/ncaa-name-image-likeness-mac-football-recruiting/7769806002/The article is behind a pay wall, so you will need to be a subscriber to read. An excerpt: “That means student-athletes from Western Michigan to Detroit Mercy can reap a hefty harvest from monetizing their accounts or signing local endorsements — even those who don't play highly televised sports such as basketball or football.”

Paige Bueckers, a women's player at UConn, signed big earlier this month. www.courant.com/sports/uconn-womens-basketball/hc-sp-uconn-women-paige-bueckers-wasserman-20210805-20210805-p7aa3vcdtfcchgdxzats7jku6u-story.html. The general consensus is that she'll earn well over $1 million/yr., far more than she'd earn in the WNBA. She's got over 900,000 Instagram followers and over 330,000 on TikTok. (I don't use either platform so I'm not too familiar with them--I set up an Instagram account yrs ago but found Instagram had very little value, either my acct or looking at others--but apparently that's on me). A while back someone posted how Duquesne (I think) now has a staff member to help student/athletes with monetizing their profiles. Personally, I think it's a good idea.

This really isn't directed at Name, Image and Likeness opportunities for individual athletes. "The partnership will give CSMG the right to sell sponsorship, multimedia, and other intangible property assets for Detroit Mercy athletics, including events, digital, social, mobile content, signage, and intellectual property. CSMG will monetize current sponsorship and media assets to develop new innovative strategies to help maximize exposure and revenue for the school." The Department has outsourced these marketing duties to CSMG. Reminds me of the effort several years ago when we outsourced things to a different marketing group. We've hired an agency to sell these things for us. It is the same agency that helps the Horizon League market itself and make so much money from events like the men's and women's basketball championships at the Indiana Farmers' Coliseum. Here's what CSMG means by the jargon "integrated media rights." Also, CSMG has close ties with FloSports. Scroll the testimonials to see one from FloSports and not from ESPN. With ESPN in trouble financially and the Horizon League itself aligned with CSMG, it would not surprise me to see to us on FloSports in the near future. On one hand, this alleviates the need for the Department to hire people to perform these tasks and it's always to good to get the perspective of outsiders about selling things. On the other hand, I notice that nothing was said about ticketing and game sales. That has been an area of woeful performance by the Department for decades. We expect to have a very competitive team this year. We should be targeting the December 11th home opener against WMU to fill the arena - even if we have to sell tickets for $1.00.

Thanks for that clarification/correction. I read too fast and thought it said Detroit Mercy “athletes” not “athletics.” Agree we need to really market the December Saturday home game against WMU (and CMU too), and then continue amped efforts to help bolster attendance for the eleven Horizon games to follow at Calihan.

Looks like Detroiter Wendell Green (currently at Auburn) has an endorsement deal with Yoshi's Japanese Grill, a Detroit area eatery with several locations. yoshigrille.com/
