Former University of Kentucky coach Joe B. Hall passed away on January 15. Hall was coach of the Wildcats for 12 season, succeeding Adolph Rupp. He won 297 games and a national championship in 1978. Under Hall, the university accelerated the recruitment of Black players; prior to Hall's arrival, only 3 Black players had played for Kentucky basketball. In addition to recruiting players, Hall also took what was at the time a major step when he hired a young man named Leonard Hamilton as as assistant. (Yes, that Leonard Hamilton.) Hall was never fully embraced by the UK fans, however, who regularly booed and second guessed him. Kentucky fans are crazy. www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/sec/2022/01/15/joe-b-hall-legendary-kentucky-basketball-coach-dies-93/6539115001/

Interesting story relayed by the announcer during a recent Florida State game, as told to him by Leonard Hamilton. When Hamilton was 26 years old, he was an assistant coach at Austin Peay. The head coaching job opened up and Hamilton applied for it. He didn't get it, and was so frustrated that he quit and took a job at Dow Chemical. Joe B. Hall heard about it; he knew of Hamilton from the year before when Austin Peay and Kentucky had played in the tournament. Hall got in touch with Hamilton and offered him a job on his staff. Hamilton took it, and the rest is history. They remained friends.
