So, let's see, UM-Dearborn is the opponent. The seats closest to the action are off-limits; you have to wear a mask, the concessions are closed, and you can't bring food or drink in (presumably to make sure you never lower your mask). What is the over/under on attendance tonight? I thought I was a die-hard fan, but not tonight. It just is not worth it. I can't remember the last time I missed a game without a good reason.

The arrogance of ND people is truly amazing. I have a buddy who went to ND and I had the chance to visit him a few times and going to football games. I remember asking one of his fellow students why she chose going to school in South Bend. Her answer wasn't that she was going to school in South Bend - it's that it was ND. Like ND was placed in a corn field for the solitary purpose of being the only school that a true Catholic would ever want to attend....because it's ND. My dad spent the first years of his life sharecropping in Mishawaka (South Bend suburb) - dirt poor. They couldn't make a living farming anymore and moved to Detroit before he started 8th grade. In Detroit, U-D was THE place for good Catholic kids and after WWII, he went there on the GI Bill.
Anyway, I suppose you could call me an arrogant Titan. I used to love ND football -- was a big Joe Montana fan when he played there. But I only have room in my heart for one school now. Wil continue to call out the school when I think it's needed. But will die a Titan. Only a Titan. All the money ND has just makes me more of a Titan. Looking forward to the day we play them again and come out on top. Just like I'm waiting for the next time we beat MSU. Never stop believing cause all of it is still possible.

What does that have to do with being a flagship for Catholicism? I thought the church was more about giving than collecting. I have felt for quite some time now that Notre Dame is really overrated. It bothers me when they are over ranked in the football polls and take a spot in the playoffs away from a much better more qualified program. As far as basketball they haven’t been flagship or really good in a long time.

The best part of being an ND fan is that everyone else hates us.
I have degrees from both UDM and ND. I don’t pick favorites among my children. I was merely pointing out that ND has a 20b endowment and could buy Georgetown with their weak ass 2b endowment. It’s sad. I don’t think Gonzaga even has an endowment, they probably operate their university by the concession sales at their basketball games?

Gonzaga’s endowment is around $308 million in the latest figures I saw. In comparison Detroit Mercy’s endowment is approaching the $100 million mark (that would be 50 cents for every $100 ND has stashed away). Another way of looking at it, if the stock market is up a half a percentage point on a given day, ND likely earns an amount larger than the entire UDM endowment. Tonight’s opponent, UM-Dearborn, has a $56 million endowment.

As far as National salary Ranking Notre Dame is 5-6 best as far as the quality of their degree for their graduates. Georgetown diploma’s are the most desirable and Santa Clara is second regardless of how much cash they manage to sock away. So Georgetown with its measly 3 1/2 billion endowment is doing the best as an educational institution and should be considered the flagship and the pattern for other Catholic Universities.

Growing up in NYC, I can tell you that ND was NYC's home team. I would think that from Chicago east ND may have more supporters than the rest of the Catholic schools combined. Years ago Dickie V talked about an all Catholic Basketball league, if ND had gone along with that, it might have been bigger than the Big East.

I hate the ACC. I know it won’t happen, but a 16 team non football national Catholic conference would be amazing

It would have been amazing, could have gone 20 or 22 teams, midwest and eastern, go as far as Marquette and Chicago. The league championship with Villanova playing Loyola or ND would have been a hot ticket in the Garden.....

How it started. How it's going. Well, it's TP. He probably blocked all references to Titan basketball because he's mad that Titan fans called him out on his BS. :-)

With all that endowment/investment money they should... 1) Dramatically increase enrollment to give more kids a chance to get ahead in life at the 'Catholic flagship' OR
2) Reduce the annual tuition hikes, because heck, they are already swimming in it and college affordability is a major problem in this country
3) Do both 1 and 2 OR
4) Just admit that just like the Ivy schools, they are a hedge fund/investment company first, teaching of higher learning as a distant second. Colleges and their hoarded cash are out of control.
(boasting about endowment fund or college rankings to make one feel better to others is, well, tacky to say the least, desperate for approval is more apt, and more a trait of a Catholic flagship education than a rock solid Jesuit education)
