I didn't notice at the NKU game if Phillips is on our bench. What's up with him? Looked really rusty in the one game he played major minutes. Shaw doesn't look like he's ready to contribute yet so we're really gonna need Waterman to defend, rebound and stay outta foul trouble if Akec can't go. Koka looks like he might be able to spell Willie a little bit better now - very different player and obviously needs PT which we can't afford to give him until we have to give him minutes (catch 22, isn't it?). Sylla looked like he's a basketball player in his spot appearance yesterday. I guess you have to remember that Robert Morris had given up by the time he came in, but no matter what, he looks like someone who can run and chew gum at the same time and either you can do that or you can't...

Youngstown State
When: Friday, February 11, 7:00 p.m. Where: Beeghly Center, Youngstown, Ohio TV: ESPN+ Radio: WLQV 1500 AM & 92.7 FM
Youngstown State is, like Robert Morris, a team that missed its early season game at Calihan due to Covid, and which is also playing good ball as the Titans come into town. The Penguins have won 5 straight for the second time this year, and are coming off a big upset of Oakland on Wednesday. They're tied with the Titans for 5th place, a few percentage points behind the Titans, so this game has major implications for a first round HL tournament bye. If the Penguins win on Friday, their next three games are at home against Robert Morris, UIC, and IUPUI, before finishing up with road games at NKU and WSU. Beyond the importance in this year's race, a win would guarantee three straight winning seasons for the Penguins for the first time since 1983-85.
Last year YSU had won of the most porous defenses in the country. This year, despite the early season loss of Garrett Covington, a two-time Horizon All-Defense selection, YSU ranks 3rd in Horizon in fewest points allowed per game. But wait--don't be fooled--the defense is really bad. It's YSU's slow tempo--232nd in the nation according to KenPom--that keeps the points down. KenPom puts their defensive efficiency at 286th, and the raw stats place them 230th in opponents three point shooting percentage, 263rd in three pointers allowed, and 323rd in personal fouls. These numbers bold well for the Titans, who strongest attributes on offense are three point shooting and foul shooting. But, in keeping with the "on the one hand..." nature of this preview, the Penguins have tightened up their three point defense quite a bit in conference play, so we'll see.
This is going to be an especially tough game if Madut Akec is on the bench, but I still like our chances. The team seems to be playing well.
Probable Youngstown Starters: G: #5 Dwayne Cohill, 6-2 Jr. (13.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.2 apg, 35.7% 3Pt): A transfer from Dayton, Cohill was expected to be a major part of the Flyers team last year but lost the season to injuries. It took Cohill a while to get back in the swing of things this year, but over the past 10 games he has averaged 18.3 points and 3.1 assists while shooting 41.4% from three.
G: #22 Shemar Rathan-Mays, 5-11 Soph. (8.3 ppg, 38.5% 3Pt). On last year's Horizon all-freshman team, Rathan-Mays is capable of going off for 20 points.
G: #2 Tevin Olison, 6-4 Sr. (12.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 34.3 3Pt). A transfer from D-2, Olison has started every game and is second on the team in minutes played. He's an efficient scorer, and has scored at least 15 points eleven times, including 19 in the upset of Oakland on Wednesday.
F: #25 William Dunn, 6-8 Soph. (5.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg). After a three-game stretch in which the sophomore from Quincy, Michigan scored 50 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, in the last three games Dunn has a total of just 10 points and 9 rebounds. His minutes have gone 31, 30, 30, 19, 15, 13, and there is some speculation that Myles Hunter--the starter here for most of the year--will replace him in the opening lineup on Friday. OTOH, YSU is 5-0 since Dunn replaced Hunter, so why switch now?
F: #31 Michael Akuchie, 6-8 Gr. (13.2 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 29.9% 3Pt). 5th-year player Akuchie has gotten better every year with the Penguins, and this year has emerged as the key player for the Penguins. He's had 5 double-doubles, and is capable of hitting the three when open. He had a career high 33 points against Milwaukee two weeks ago, and is currently working on a little three-game string with double figures in rebounds.
Bench PG: #10, Luke Chacone, 5-10 Fr. (3.6 ppg, 2.7 apg). Freshman Chacone is probably the team's best ball-handler, and will play more if the Penguins are starters start turning it over. He doesn't score much and rarely shoots threes, but did have a season high 13 against Fort Wayne a week ago.
SG: #15 Myles Hunter, 6-5 Soph. (5.2 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 30.0% 3Pt). The inconsistent sophomore was on against Oakland on Wednesday, playing 30 minutes and scoring 12 points.
SG: #24 Chris Shelton 6-4 Jr. (5.0 ppg, 32.6% 3Pt). The nation's leading three point shooter last year with Hampton, Shelton has found the going a bit tougher in the Horizon and his playing down has slowly declined over the year. In fact, he's missed the last couple games, though I can't determine if that's due to Covid, injury, or coach's decision. While he hasn't been too deadly this year, I should probably mention that he was the nation's leading three point shooter last year with Hampton. So don't overlook him.
G: #13 Owen Long, 6-2 Jr. (3.0 ppg, 34.5% 3Pt). G: #23 Daniel Ogoro, 6-5 Soph. (3.5 ppg, 34.9 3Pt) F: #1 Jamir Thomas, 6-8 Sr. (2.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg). The 6-8, 275 lb. Thomas is the only guy on the YSU who is a real banger, and if you caught that weight, you see I mean banger. He doesn't play a ton of minutes, but gives the Penguins a different look. It's not inconceivable he'll get more time if coach Calhoun discovers the Titans just don't have anyone with the strength to guard him.

We're on the road tonight, so this beautiful graphic will not change for us. I know one team that will no longer be pictured by the time the Super Bowl is played!

This guy on the graphic doesn't play much (only 2.4 ppg), but at 6'8" 275#, he might knock down Koka & Waterman like a bowling ball knocking down pins!

We're on the road tonight, so this beautiful graphic will not change for us. I know one team that will no longer be pictured by the time the Super Bowl is played! Remember when we held the nation's longest home court winning streak at 39 games in a row between 1999 and 2002. Those were the days. Here's a quote from Coach Watson talking about our NCAA game vs St John's. "I remember the big message I sent to those guys was that we belong. It was going to be a city street fight and they might be hard-nosed, tough players, but so were we. Every thing was going to be hard fought, every rebound, every loose ball, every layup, but somewhere, we are going to make a run that is going to give us separation. We weren't just happy to be there." To bad our guys today don't play this way each and every time they step on to the court. I'm sorry for hijacking this thread - back to the Y State talk. GO TITANS!

Sylla makes an appearance at the 14 minute mark of the 1st half And makes a nice strong move to hoop to score. We're back to playing dribble dribble stand around dribble offense.

Getting open looks from behind the arc, but they aren’t falling. Titans now just 3-17 on their three point shot attempts.

Terrible performance so far. Luckily, we're still within striking distance.
Thre only thing worse than our performance from deep is Hasty on the radio.
