Earlier this week I had a phone conversation with a young lawyer who was a four year scholarship soccer player for UDM..She is also a UDM law school grad..Despite being a student athlete and having a seven year history with the University, she had no idea there is a John Conti Letterman of Distinction Award. I respectfully ask, how is this possible? Can someone in the Athletic Department answer this question??

You should ask them! I’m not sure how many alums we have who were student athletes, but I would guess many 10 of thousands over the last 60 years in all sports. So still kicking! If just 10% of those made a $1000 financial commitment, the school could easily raise the $1M it needs for the athletic training center.

Not sure if we have many tens of thousands of former athletes out there (the University estimates a total living alumni population of 88,000), but your point is well taken. Athletics has a new fundraising/development person starting next week and hopefully he will be successful in reaching out to all sectors of the potential giving base. I haven’t seen any recent statistics, but I believe only about 10% of UDM alumni make an annual donation to the University.

So multiply that by 60 classes and you get 7,500 and true, not even one 10,000! Nonetheless, 10% of those 7,500 living former student athletes should be able to raise a lot towards the needs of the athletic program including that million dollar beautiful training center I have seen a concept of.
