NCAA
Michigan 76, Tennessee 68. This was the first time I watched Tennessee (27-8) all year, and they were really good. Every time I've watched Michigan (19-14)--maybe 5 or 6 games--they've been really good. I wonder how they ever lost 14 times. A very competitive and interesting game. Hunter Dickinson was great with 27 points and 10 rebounds, but it was a couple key late plays by Terrance Williams that keyed the win.
North Carolina 93, Baylor 86 (OT). After crushing Marquette in the opening round, UNC jumped all over defending national champion Baylor today, leading by 25 points midway through the second half. Then Brady Manek got himself ejected for a truly bizarre flagrant foul, and when he left the floor apparently the rest of the team thought that meant the game was over. UNC then went into a near epic collapse (report are that Raleigh hospitals are flooded with heart attack victims), and Baylor tied it on a James Akinjo 3-point play with 16 seconds to go. But UNC (26-9) righted itself in OT, and got the win. Manek had 26 in just 28 minutes before being ejected; RJ Davis added 30, and Armando Bacot 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Tarheels. Adam Flagler had 27 and Akinjo 20 for Baylor (27-7).
St. Peter's 70, Murray State 60. For the second year in a row, a #15 seed reaches the Sweet 16. And now St. Peter's gets to play in front of what should be a wildly partisan crowd in Philadelphia. The Peacocks (21-11) led start to finish. In both their wins, it was a pleasure to watch a team with less physical talent win behind coaching, execution, and desire.
Arkansas 53, New Mexico State 48. A game of runs with a tight finish. New Mexico State (27-7) held Arkansas to 28% shooting, but shot just 34% themselves and simply had too many turnovers (18) to take down the Razorbacks (27-8). The Hogs' 22 of 25 from the foul line helped, too.
Kansas 79, Creighton 72. Creighton (23-12) didn't go down easy.
Providence 79, Richmond 51. Providence (27-5) has avoided the big guys, but in wins over South Dakota State and Richmond (24-13) they've been really imporessive.
Gonzaga 82, Memphis 78. A fun, fast game to end the day--at least until the final minute, which dragged on forever in a series of timeouts and intentional fouls. But the Zags (28-3) went 6-6 from the line in the final 40 seconds to hold off the Tigers (22-11). Drew Timme had 25 points and 14 rebounds.
UCLA 72, St. Mary's 56. I thought the Gaels (26-8) would win this, but UCLA (27-7) handled them in convincing fashion.
NIT Texas A&M 75, Oregon 60. Texas A&M (25-12) used 14 players--a nice touch by Coach Williams to use this game to make sure that whatever else happens, everybody can say they played in the NIT.
Wake Forest 80, VCU 74. BYU 90, Northern Iowa 71.
CBI Drake 87, Purdue-Fort Wayne 65. Drake (25-10) really got hosed by the NIT selection committee, but that leaves them as a favorite in the CBI. Fort Wayne (21-12) relies on shooting, and they didn't shoot well today.
Ohio 65, Rice 64. The Bobcats (25-9) built a couple of big leads, but Rice (16-17) kept coming back and took their first lead of the night with 1:06 to play. A Mark Sears basket got OU back in front, and after a stop, Ben Vandeplas hit free throws to ice the win.
UNC-AShville 80, Stephen F. Austin 68. A mild upset here. Middle Tennessee State 64, Cal-Baptist 58.
The Basketball Classic Youngstown State 100, Wofford 0. Actually, Wofford forfeited, deciding that the Classic was just too damned disorganized.
UTEP 80, Western Illinois 54. Portland 94, New Orleans 73.

I don't believe St Peters has nearly the talent that UDM had this year, but they are a well-coached team whose will to win is apparent. Their league now gets at least 3 shares of NCAA money.
Their win over KY showed the "blue bloods" from KY what schoolyard ball in Jersey City is like.

NCAA
A bad day for the Big 10, but Purdue saved the day.
Duke 85, Michigan State 76. Duke (30-6) outscored MSU (23-13) 20-6 over the final 5 minutes to advance. Coach K ends up 13-3 against Coach I.
Villanova 71, Ohio State 61. Like the MSU game, this one was closer than the final score suggests, with Villanova (28-7) outscoring the Bucks (20-12) 11-3 in the final 5 minutes.
Houston 68, Illinois 53. Like the MSU and OSU games, this one was closer than the final score indicates. It was a tough, two-point game with 8 minutes left.
Iowa State 54, Wisconsin 49. Watching this, I just thought Wisconsin (25-8) was outhustled in the closing minutes. The Badgers were just 2-22 from behind the arc. Iowa State goes from 2-22 last year to 22-12 and the Sweet 16. That's got to be one of the biggest single season turnarounds ever.
Purdue 81, Texas 71. A tough, hard-fought game ruined late by way too many game stops to review the instant replay. Let the refs call it. Michigan product Tevion Williams led the Boilermakers (29-7) with 22 points on 10-13 shooting, and 7 rebounds.
Texas Tech 59, Notre Dame 53. A really good game, but Tech (27-9) outscored the Irish 10-1 in the final two minutes. Notre Dame (24-11) accomplished a lot more than people thought they could after a 4-6 start.
Miami 79, Auburn 61. Miami (25-10) may be the most ignored P6 team in the country. They led by just 1 at the half but pulled steadily away in the second half.
Arizona 85, TCU 80. A great overtime game to end the weekend.
This was about as good a first weekend of the NCAA tournament as I can remember.
NIT Vanderbilt 70, Dayton 68 (OT). In overtime, Liam Roberts put Vandy (19-16) ahead with 39 seconds left, and then blocked Dayton's final shot.
Virginia 71, North Texas 69. North Texas (25-7) held Virginia (21-13) scoreless for the final 5:46 of regulation to force overtime, but the pent-up Cavalier offense scored 16 points in the extra period to win.
St. Bonaventure 70, Oklahoma 68. I gather from the score that this was a good game. Xavier 72, Florida 56. Washington State 75, SMU 63. Former Western Michigan and Southfield star Michael Flowers had 22 to pace WSU (21-14).
CBI UNC-Wilmington 93, VMI 78. Boston U. 71, UNC-Greensboro 68. UNC-Ashville advanced in this tournament yesterday. Not all branches of UNC could win. Northern Colorado 74, Florida Atlantic 71. Abilene Christian 82, Troy 70.

Monday, March 21
Yes, there was ball tonight.
CBI UNC-Wilmington 76, Drake 75. Drake (25-11) got out front early, and the lead just kept growing, to 17 at halftime and to 21 with about 12 minutes left. And then? A collapse of epic proportions. UNC-Wilmington (25-9) got the lead with 4 seconds left and got the win. Former Green Bay Phoenix Tank Hemphill led Drake with 15 points and 7 rebounds.
Abilene Christian 91, Ohio 86. Mark Sears had 35 points for Ohio (25-10), but he needed 41. Middle Tennessee State 76, Boston U. 46. Middle Tennessee is 25-10. Northern Colorado 87, UNC-Ashville 84.
Basketball Classic Coastal Carolina 84, Florida Gulf Coast 68. This doesn't make me feel better about last Wednesday's result. South Alabama 83, USC-Upstate 79.

FGCU played at Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers started two 6'9" guys. Their center weighs 250 lbs. Also, the game against us was a very emotional one for FGCU. Chambers was introduced as head coach the day before. He was watching the game from the private box in the end zone to the left of the TV screen. Half their roster went from refusing to play on Tuesday to deciding to play and win one last home game for the fired coach who had recruited them.

NIT St. Bonaventure 52, Virginia 51. Pretty good game. The Bonnies (23-9) pulled to within 1 point on a three with 23 seconds remaining, fouled, and UVa missed the front end of a 1+1. Kyle Lofton then hit a couple free throws with 5 seconds left. Virginia (21-14) successfully inbounded and actually got the ball close to the basket, but Osun Osuniyi blocked the shot. St. Bonaventure is going to the Garden.
Xavier 75, Vanderbilt 73. Xavier (21-13) never led in the first 38 minutes, but led when it counted most. Scottie Pippin, Jr. had 28 for Vandy (19-17).
CBI UNC-Wilmington 80, Northern Colorado 64. UNC-Wilmington (26-9) advances to the CBI final. Middle Tennessee State 85, Abilene Christian 69. The Blue Raiders (26-10) dominated after trailing by 7 at the half. Abilene Christian finishes 25-11.
Two 26-wins teams in the final is pretty good. Just 633 in attendance tonight in Daytona. Attendance at Monday's quarter finals session was reported at 706, and at Saturday/Sunday's first round games it was 799 and 762, respectively. So maybe the central location doesn't work--at least if you want fans in attendance.
The Basketball, ahem, Classic Southern Utah 82, UTEP 69. The Thunderbirds (22-11) advance to the sort of semi-finals. Over 3500 in attendance at the Don Haskins Center.

What to Watch for March 23. Triple header on the Deuce.
5:00 PM Middle Tennessee State vs UNC-Wilmington. ESPN2. Two teams with 26 wins each makes for an interesting match up. MTSU is a 4 point favorite in the CBI title game.
7:00 PM Wake Forrest vs Texas A&M ESPN2. ESPN2. Game of the night. Couple of 25 win high major teams in the NIT quarters. The Demon Deacons were consistent winners all year, but a poor strength of schedule hurt their NCAA tourney chances. Texas A&M closed the season playing as some of the best ball in the country, winning 9 of 10, but a soft non-conference schedule and an eight game mid season losing streak hurt their chances for the Big Dance. Both teams seem focused on winning this tournament, getting over the disappointment of not making the big one.
9:00 PM Klay Thompson vs Danny Ainge. ESPN2. Washington State vs BYU in another NIT quarterfinal.
Also tonight, but not televised on any major network, Fresno State takes on Youngstown State in The Basketball Classic. Tip Off is 10:00 PM and FSU is favored by 13. You can find the game on ESPN Plus if you are interested in cheering for (or against) our fellow HL member.

Wednesday, March 23
NIT Texas A&M 67, Wake Forest 62. A&M continues to play well. They led by 17 at the half and are heading to the Big Apple. Over 8200 in attendance in College Station.
Washington State 77, BYU 58. In the second NIT quarterfinal, Washington State (22-14) walloped BUY (24-11) behind 27 points from Michigander Mike Flowers. Over 11,000 in attendance at Provo.
CBI UNC-Wilmington 96, Middle Tennessee State 90 (2OT). UNC-Wilmington (27-9) is your CBI Champ. Middle Tennessee (26-11) led for most of the second half, but UNC-Wilmington tied it on free throws with 1 second left. In the first overtime, it was MTSU got the heroics, a three pointer by Donovan Sims with about 4 seconds left to tie. It stayed neck and neck through the second OT--UNC-Wilmington made 5 free throws in the final 6 seconds. Attendance listed at 624.
Basketball Classic Fresno State 80, Youngstown State 71. YSU played well on the road against the highest ranked team (#73) in the Classic, but when Michael Akuchie fouled out with 7:19 to go--after picking up 2 fouls in one second--YSU couldn't keep up. A good season for the Penguins, though--for only the second time, they put together three straight winning seasons. Their 19 wins were the most they've had in a season since 1998, and their 12-9 conference mark was the best since they joined the Horizon in 2002. Dwayne Cohill led the Penguin effort tonight with 26 points. Attendance was 1754. Fresno State is 21-13.

In the CBI championship last night, the unlikely hero was Khadim Samb, a UNCW junior who has played only about 60 minutes total all season, averaging less than a point per game. He didn't play last night until overtime. He came into the game as a 56% free throw shooter, but in the final six seconds of the game he made three of four free throws, effectively sealing the win. Don't know what happens for him the rest of his career but he is always going to remember those moments.

What to Watch on March 24. Watch everything! It's an amazing slate of games on one of the best sports nights of the year.
7:00 PM Sidney Moncrief vs John Stockton. CBS. Arkansas and Gonzaga duel in the West Region.
7:15 PM Rumeal Robinson vs Kerry Kittles. TBS. Michigan is hot, but Nova is Nova. Expect a battle.
9:39 PM Darvin Ham vs Shane Battier (Couple of Michigan kids) CBS. Texas Tech was thought to be in trouble after losing Chris Beard. Duke is hoping to give Coach K a title on his way out the door.
9:50 PM Clyde Drexler vs Sean Elliot TBS. Houston is one of the toughest teams in college basketball, and won't back down. Arizona dominated the PAC 12 in coach Tommy Lloyd's first year with the program.
Enjoy the games. I'll miss the last two because my wife and one of my bonus daughters wants to go see the new Sandra Bullock movie, and they want me to go with them. Oh, well. Happy wife, happy life.

NCAA Villanova 63, Michigan 55. Michigan won this game on the floor, but lost it when shooting--they were 7-14 from the foul line and missed more point blank shots than an imperial stormtrooper with a faulty sight. Villanova didn't shoot well either--just 37% from the floor and 30% from three--but they didn't get the good looks UM was getting, and they made their foul shots, as Villanova always does.
Arkansas 74, Gonzaga 68. If you didn't see this result already you probably aren't really a fan.
Houston 72, Arizona 60. And three number one seeds are gone. Duke 78, Texas Tech 73. Oh, K. Duke did not miss a shot from the floor in the final 7 minutes. These last games were both played with palpable intensity.

Impressive stat: Houston scored 21 points off of Arizona turnovers and 19 points off of offensive rebounds. That's Houston basketball.
