At least according to this site: roughingthepasser.football/2022/03/19/college-basketball-teams-ranked-historically-2/
They put Detroit #89 of 485 teams that have been classified as "major" college at some point.
They use a simple formula of ranking each team based on:
Wins
Winning Percentage
Post-Season Appearances
Conference Titles
NBA Draft Picks
Weeks In Top 25
Seasons ended ranked
Winning Seasons
Losing Seasons
It's a simple formula but produces what seems at first glance to be pretty credible rankings. The top 20 are:
1. Kentucky
2. Kansas
3. North Carolina
4. Duke
5. Syracuse
6. Temple
7. UCLA
8. St. John's
9. Notre Dame
10. BYU
11. Louisville
12. Indiana
13. Purdue
14. Cincinnati
15. Utah
16. Arizona
17. Illinois
18. Western Kentucky
19. Texas
20. Villanova
At #89 the Titans are just behind the likes of Bucknell (84), Texas A&M, South Carolina, Georgia, Marshall (88), and just ahead of Navy (90), San Francisco, Duquesne, Bowling Green, and Richmond.
Some others of interest:
26. Princeton
28. Michigan State
29. Arkansas
33. Bradley
38. Dayton
39. Georgetown
44. Marquette
47. Michigan (until the 1960s Michigan was usually a bit of a dog in hoops)
53. Butler
56. Creighton
60. Ohio U.
64. Seton Hall
65. Xavier
68. Santa Clara
73. Toledo
76. Niagara
77. DePaul
79. St. Louis
95. Texas Tech
98. Holy Cross
99. Miami (Ohio)
100. St. Bonaventure
103. Iowa State
104. La Salle
107. Loyola
109. Gonzaga
117. Western Michigan
120. Canisius
126. Houston
128. Providence
138. Boston College
139. Valparaiso
150. Iona
161. Miami (Fl)
193. St. Peter's
211. Cleveland State
229. Eastern Michigan
234. Green Bay
238. Robert Morris
250. Central Michigan
254. UIC
255. Wright State
267. Milwaukee
288. Youngstown
311. Oakland
323. IUPUI
335. Purdue-Fort Wayne
369. Northern Kentucky
423. Wayne State
Unfortunately, longevity accounts for a lot of points (that's why NKU is way down at #369). I'm sure that our rank under this formula would be in steady decline from 40, 20, of even 10 years ago.
