If you noticed, both private schools who are members of the HL finished tied for last in the overall standings. That is not a coincidence. The HL is operated to cater to the intermediate sized publicly-funded university. Those schools are the target market for the conference.

If you noticed, both private schools who are members of the HL finished tied for last in the overall standings. That is not a coincidence. The HL is operated to cater to the intermediate sized publicly-funded university. Those schools are the target market for the conference. Not just in Horizon League. Look at the winners of national championships in the past 20 years. Almost all football championships are public schools (USC and Notre Dame are the exceptions). Baseball, with the exception of Vanderbilt, is all public schools. Basketball, the holdout with about 2-to-1 public over private. Someone on one thread recently asked why we have let our lacrosse program "slide." Lacrosse strongly private but then state schools took note and five of the last six are "power" conference teams. Private schools are suffering across all conferences and generally are at the bottom in achievements. When was the last time Northwestern won a major sport championship in the Big 10? Same for Stanford in the Pac whatever. ACC has quite a few private schools, but traditional powerhouses are fading in sports other than basketball. It's difficult for a private school to compete with the financial resources of even a secondary (directional) state school.

But also schools like Loyola CHI and Valpo have moved UP the ladder. Not to mention the Big East, Gonzaga, etc. This sounds like excuses as to why we flail annually with athletics. We don't have to. It can be better than this, or I think all of us want to believe it can be better. If the stinkin' HL is too much for us, then why do we ever waste typing time talking about moving UP. If the HL is too much than we just ought to just accept and be okay with slipping further and further back. Don't we spend more on men's hoops than anyone in the HL? And isn't that true for a long time now? C'mon guys, being a doormat across all athletics in the HL is NOT what we strive for nor is it explained away with excuses.
Meanwhile, congrats to Oakland as they continually and annually dominant the HL across so many sports. This means they have more glory, hang more banners, and have a general sense of being a winner of a program as they have all these teams winning and playing in the NCAAs in their respective sports.

Valpo has been in a steady decline since Bryce Drew left. One winning season since 2017-18.
