The NIT has been declining in importance for years, lack of interest in the MSG event seems to be tied to the lack of any rated NY area teams, I hope it makes a comeback. It was a worthy even.

Do you think that the emergence of the other sub post season tournaments helped contribute to the decline of the NIT?

Do you think that the emergence of the other sub post season tournaments helped contribute to the decline of the NIT? I don’t. NIT was still a clear #2. When CBI started, it intended to compete with NIT, and for a couple years sorta did, but certainly not for the last decade. I think leaving NYC will hurt—I doubt attendance will pick up, and I think the idea of a trip to NY and playing in the Garden still had some cache. But I wouldn’t be shocked if the NCAA either by rule or de facto splits into what would be essentially 1-A and 1-AA. If so, the NIT could transmogrify into the 1-AA championship.

That is disappointing. I know today's players (and coaches) don't care as much about history and tradition as generations past, but I think there is still something special about playing for a championship in the Garden.

As conference tournaments begin this week, Jon Rothstein has these thoughts on the NIT and the impact recent changes to the tournament have on mid majors.
