The result on the tournament surprises me too—it’s good when people recognize that if something ain’t broke, you don’t need to fix it.
That said, the perception of most, both mod and high-major fans—that the P6 would suck up all the bids, is largely incorrect. What really happens is that the low majors—schools that would have no shot at at-large bids—take about two-thirds of their bids away from better mid-majors. The teams that lose are those Ranked in the 45-70 group, which is where you find lots of the best mid-majors. So you get a couple more mid-majors in the tournament, but mainly at the expense of better mid-majors that would be much more competitive in the tournament.
