One of the big questions facing the Spartans this year is how will they replace Kenny Goins and all that he did for the team. At least for one night, the answer was freshman Malik Hall. On the road against a very good Seton Hall team, Malik scored 17 points, shooting 7-7 from the floor. He also had five rebounds and a block in only 19 minutes. Talk about a coming out party...

Guard Josh Langford has been ruled out for the rest of the season after having surgery on his foot. Tough blow for the Spartans, really tough blow for Langford. I'm not sure what his plans are going forward: return to MSU or test the pro waters.
Langford had star potential. I feel bad for him.

Cassius Winston broke Mateen Cleaves's Big Ten career assist record tonight in the Spartan win over Wisconsin. What a career for the Detroiter. In that super talented class, he's easily had the greatest impact on the program.

Michigan State plays Nebraska tonight. The Huskers are coached by Fred Hoiberg. Coach Izzo started Jack Hoiberg tonight, a walk on and the son of Fred. Nice moment.

MSU junior guard Cassius Winston is graduating this week with a bachelor's degree in Advertising Management. Check the scoreboard for his three years at Michigan State: Two conference championships, a trip to the Final Four, All American recognition, Big Ten player of the year, and a degree. Pretty nice haul. Amazing he could have done so much without leaving Michigan for one of those out of state basketball factories! Ten months after the above post, Cassius Winston has wrapped up a career that cemented him as one of the greatest Spartans ever. Winston added another Big Ten title and a couple of career assist records to his ledger this season. I expected Winston to be a good player at Michigan State, but I didn't expect him to be quite this good. Bravo, young man. I'll always appreciate you wearing a Detroit Titan t-shirt during AAU seasons. www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/michigan-state-university/2020/03/13/michigan-states-cassius-winston-goes-out-winner/5043595002/

Cassius is a class act, and although I admire Winston and pray for him and his family with the suffering they are going through, I could never applaud someone from Detroit, and especially the Catholic League, and oh yeah, especially U-D High, for "wearing a Titan t-shirt" somewhere. If he really had wanted to make a difference in his hometown, he would have worn the Titan Red for 4 years. That would have been the way to be a game-changer for your city. Webber and Rose spoke well of Coach Watson and U-D. In the end, it made no difference at 6 & Livernois.

Didn't expect to see such a petty response to a post that simply acknowledged a hometown kid making good, but in retrospect I really shouldn't be surprised.

Not a petty response at all, Sam.
Cassius is a great person, mature beyond his years, who will do great things in life whether or not he is talented enough for a long NBA career. What I am saying is that I used to care about "other" schools, and I used to care when kids like Webber said "U-D was my second choice" at his Press Conference announcing where he was going to school (I was at the Presser). It means nothing. Nobody cares about us except us. It was Cassius' choice to take the obvious road and go to the Big 10 School. That's fine. He did well there. It was obviously a good choice for him. But we are also a great school with a storied Program. We need uber-local kids like him, with his talent and leadership abilities, to choose U-D. I will argue that if he was at U-D this year that we would have had one of the very best offensive backcourts IN THE COUNTRY. A small backcourt, but an unstoppable one. I don't follow the preps like I used to, but I am sure there was another 6-9 or taller kid coming out of Michigan the same year Cassius did that is a stud today. I argue that if the 2 of them had come to U-D together that even with our current talent level, add those two and we'd be NCAA bound (a moot point for 2 reasons right now). But we'd be good enough for the Sweet 16. Add another stud forward and we're Final Four material. It only takes a couple super kids with dedication and leadership to turn around a basketball program. This is not football.
That's all I'm saying. No dissing Cassius. I like him and I would not trade lives with him today. What he and his family are going through is horrible, and I pray for him. I am just saying that when it comes to college basketball, you're either a Titan, or you're not...

I would think Burke, who is from Stevensville, may be worth trying to get. For those who don't know, he's a 7-0, 245 lb. center. He started at Robert Morris and averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds in 15 minutes per game as a freshman. He's been a preferred walk-on at MSU the last three years (the first sitting out as a transfer). He's played less than 30 minutes in a total of 17 games over the last 2 seasons. He had publicly reported offers out of high school to Appalachian State, Oakland, Youngstown State, and Stetson, as well as RMU. Coach Ray scouted him but did not offer. At the time we were targeting as bigs Dylan Carl, who's been a starter at Fort Wayne the last couple seasons, and Al Eichelberger, now a starter at Cleveland State, and then we signed juco Isaiah Jones. Burke could be a Pat Ackerman, but I can envision him putting up 10 points and 6 rebounds a game as a starter at Detroit, and giving us that presence in the paint. I leave that evaluation up to the coaches, but I think they'd want to reach out and take a look if there's any interest on Burke's part.
