Yeah, it's time already. Time for some "way too early" polls and other speculation about the 2023-24 season. Back in the old days, prior to the transfer portal, NIL, the NBA drafting mostly on potential, and "everyone gets a waiver", these early polls had a little more validity. Nowadays, with all of the above and the extra Covid year, they have less value than ever. Take it for what it's worth. ESPN weighs in: 1. UConn 2. Marquette 3. Duke 4. Kentucky 5. FAU 6. Michigan State 7. Kansas 8. Arizona 9. Houston 10. Creighton 11. Alabama 12. Arkansas 13. Colorado 14. Miami 15. Purdue 16. USC 17. Texas A&M 18. Texas 19. North Carolina Tar Heels 20. Baylor Bears 21. Gonzaga 22. San Diego State 23. Tennessee 24. St. Mary's 25. I don't have exact numbers to compare but it seems like we're seeing more late de-commitments for the 2023 class this year than we have seen in previous seasons. Mid major, high major, seems like they are coming on every level. De-commitments are not new (as Titan fans know too well) but the timing seems different. Yesterday, 5 star recruit Ron Holland de-committed from Texas. He signed his NLI in the Fall while Chris Beard was the coach, but after Beard was fired he reaffirmed his intention to attend Texas and publicly supported interim coach Rodney Terry for the big job, which Terry eventually got. His decision comes after 5 star recruit/Texas signee AJ Johnson decided to forgo college for a professional season in the NBL in Australia. My belief is that the Holland decision was a money one, too. I think he is after a better NIL deal. In fact, you could see a trend in the future of 5 star recruits waiting until Spring to sign their NLI, hoping to get the biggest deal possible.
The other thing happening now is we are in the middle of a recruiting and evaluation period on the NCAA college basketball calendar, meaning a lots of events, lots of contact with recruits, lots of offers made, and lots of visits with recruits taking place across the college basketball landscape. I am sure that the Titans are in attendance at the events for JUCO and high school players. I could be wrong, but I have the feeling that we'll get some more good Titan recruiting news by the end of May.
