Had planned on walking on at Cal State Northridge, but I read somewhere that he had offers from Lamar and Lafayette at one time. Poor kid. He's stuck between CS-Northridge with the Mark Gottfired complication and Cleveland State.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer posted this article on the situation at CSU, but there is very little actual information here. It's starts out with a declaration that the AD should have fired Felton shortly after the AD got the job, but the article provides no actual reason for doing so. It's mostly speculation and a few vague statements that obviously came from someone in the administration who is trying to put the decision in the best light. The writers cites "some people who have at least some idea of what is happening" and information he got from Verbalcommits.com. He states that the transfer of Rashad Williams to OU is a "real insult" since he didn't leave for a high major, but doesn't mention the stories of a Williams family member in poor health here in Metro Detroit as a reason for the transfer. The writer also used the phrase, "I've been told" to justify some of his conclusions, including the number of players on the roster. There is some vague references to academic issues, once again using the "I've been told" verification. Then another "source" said "a number" of players objected to the off season conditioning program. It's an article that bounces all over the place, finally ending up praising the job that Gary Waters did with the Vikings and pulling names out of thin air as candidates for the job. He finally says, "I don't know the truth." As we used to say in middle school, "No sh!t, Sherlock." Thanks for wasting a few minutes of my Sunday morning. www.cleveland.com/sports/college/2019/07/cleveland-state-basketball-what-is-behind-the-firing-of-dennis-felton-terry-pluto.html?outputType=amp&__twitter_impression=true

Smart man. The new AD there might not have realized the details on the Bryn Forbes transfer.

If I was Stephens, I would not leave the stability of the assistant coach job with the Spartans for the uncertainty of the Cleveland State job. I imagine Stephens already makes more than a lot of mid major head coaches, so money won't be a factor. The Viking program is in bad shape; would he be given enough time to turn things around? East Lansing is probably looking pretty good.

CSU’s new coach—whoever that may be—is going to have to have open tryouts just to field a team. This was true when you said it 11 days ago, and is even more true now. Per clevelandstatehoops.blogspot.com/, the Vikings have had seven players enter the transfer portal since Felton was fired. Only four scholarship players remain, including Saginaw native and former Titan target Al Eichelberger. The late firing decision did a great disservice to the CSU players, especially the incoming players who had committed to Felton during this off season. The fact that the administration apparently had no plan to fill the vacancy after it was created is making things worse. You got a lot of players hoping to find a college home in late July or early August. That's just brutal. I don't feel bad for the administration, but I definitely feel bad for the kids. In addition to Dwayne Stephens, Cleveland area high school coach Eric Flannery has reportedly removed his name from consideration.

Dibaji Walker is headed to the transfer portal. Cleveland State is down to three scholarship players.

Since his only other option had been to walk-on at CSUN where Mark Gottfried is the head coach (for how much longer given that the NCAA is seeking to impose a show-cause order on him for recruiting violations at NC State?), this should not have been unexpected. His options were rather limited. I wonder how many players who entered the portal after Felton's firing was announced will rescind.

On paper that's a very good hire. But as we know from up close and personal experience, there is no way to be sure how good a great assistant coach will be in the big chair. Hard to find better "on paper" hires than Sicko and BA. Gates has been at the side of a top notch coach in Hamilton, but you just never know. For the sake of CSU and the conference, it would be good if he is successful there.

BA tried to take shortcut and they didn't work.

Coach Gates has started quickly recruiting for the class of 2020. Offers for two high school forwards and a JUCO guard were reported today. Of course, Gates has a lot of work to do to get a roster set for 2019-20, but it is possible that some of the players who recently entered the portal might reconsider now that a coach is in place.
