The NCAA has finally released 2012-13 official attendance figures. static.psbin.com/t/l/2qrqt0qrbynwz9/2013_Division_III_MBB_attendance.pdf. The Titans averaged 2234. While our averaged was down slightly from 2274 in 2012, we actually moved up slightly in rank, from 199th to 193rd (tied with Loyola Marymount (California)).
Here we have Horizon #s:
1. Wright State: 3786 (-3.0%) (133rd nationally).
2. Valparaiso: 3173 (-6.2%)
3. Green Bay: 3084 (+0.7%)
4. UIC: 2887 (-1.6%)
5. Youngstown State: 2451 (-1.4%)
6. Loyola: 2278 (+ 0.0%)
7. Milwaukee: 2266 (-45.4%)
8. Detroit: 2234 (-1.7%)
9. Cleveland State: 2167 (-33.5%)
As you can see, attendance was down all over - only Green Bay, up less than 1 percent, and Loyola, with a negligible increase from 2277 to 2278, increased average attendance last year. Milwaukee suffered a huge decline with a bad team and the move back to the campus Klotschke Center; Cleveland State also lost a lot, with a losing season after several years at or near the top of the league. Valpo was down more than 6% despite being the returning regular season champion and going on to win the regular season and the conference tournament. The departure of Butler certainly hurt the Horizon, as they were the biggest home draw for almost every other conference team, but bigger forces were also at work, as attendance for the NCAA D-I overall declined 1.5%. It also declined for D-II (-2.9%) and D-III (-1.2%).
Here are Michigan D-I schools:
1. Michigan State: 14,341 (-3.1%)
2. Michigan: 12,138 (+6.1%)
3. Western Michigan: 2755 (+0.4%)
4. Oakland: 2478 (-25.9%)
5. Detroit: 2234 (-1.7%)
6. Central Michigan: 1783 (+30.9%)
7. Eastern Michigan: 917 (-23.6%)
Hope, by the way, averaged 2748, easily the best in Division III and better than half of the schools nationally in D-! (would have been 166th - there are 345 schools in D-I). Calvin was second nationally in D-III at 1949.
Teams sometimes mentioned as Horizon expansion candidates:
Murray State: 5436 (-11.5%)
Evansville: 4463 (-13.1%)
Northern Kentucky: 3551 (+97.7%) (meet your next Horizon league neighbor).
Duquesne: 3400 (+6.1%) (pretty remarkable given the season they had)
Belmont: 2734 (+ 35.9%)
IPFW: 1443 (-12.9%)
Chicago State: 811 (+89.0%) (Last year Chicago State averaged 429, worst in the nation).
IUPUI: 803 (-29.1%) (these last two are two of the worst 20 drawing teams in the country)
Worst attendance in the nation goes to NJIT, at an average of 489.
Best drawing MAC schools were Ohio U. (6932 - 73rd nationally), Toledo (4122), Akron (3782) and Ball State (3122). Eastern was last in the conference.
As for conferences, Big 10 was #1 (13,114 average) for the 37th straight year; MAC was 14th (2982), Horizon was 16th (2725), Summit was 21st (2214).
Finally, the Titans outdrew just 1 current A-10 team, Fordham, which averaged 2225. GW was the next lowest at 2554. Every current MVC team outdrew Detroit, with the lowest being Horizon refugee Loyola, then Drake at 3926 average.
