DePaul completes the season sweep of Seton Hall with a 97-93 win at Seton Hall. The Demons shot 29-32 from the free throw line and currently sit at 11-6, 3-3.
Tough schedule coming up for the Demons with Marquette, Providence, Villanova, and Providence in the next four.

DePaul won at Xavier by 12. The Demons are 13-9, 5-6. First time with five Big East wins since 2015. It's a down year for the Big East, but I give the team credit for taking advantage, especially with a very strong recruiting class coming in for 2019.

The Blue Demons crushed Georgetown last night to move their record to 15-13, with one regular season game left. Thus, the Demons have ensured themselves an overall winning record in the regular season for the first time in longer than I care to mention. Part of it has been the fact that the Big East is a bit down this year, but the team has improved it's good to see a tangible sign of progress. There's a good recruiting class for 2019 on tap, and a couple of good transfers that will be eligible next season. Could the team I have been rooting for since Clyde Bradshaw ran the point, finally be turning things around?

You know how when your favorite teams signs a player that looks like a really long shot, and you hope he outperforms his reputation and ranking? That happened with DePaul this year with sophomore Paul Reed. Reed was named Most Improved Player in the Big East today, after greatly improving his year to year stats: MPG 10 to 26, PPG 4 to 11, 3PFG% 21 to 39, RPG 3 to 8, FT% 58 to 81.
Reed wasn't heavily recruited in high school. Sometimes that hidden gem is a real thing.

You beat me to it, Scout. :-) Potentially, this is a big pick up for DePaul. Moore was a highly ranked high school player, ranked in the top 100 nationally by most sites in 2016, and had a very good freshman year at Cal. He transferred after that freshman year and went to Kansas, where he was promptly recruited over during his red shirt year. He spent 208-19 getting scarce minutes behind some talented freshmen, and it was no surprise when he transferred after this season. If he gets a waiver, this would be big for DePaul, because they are thin at point guard. The other part of this commitment is that it is a sign (along with top 100 recruit/Chicago native Markese Jacobs signing with the Blue Demons for 2019) that the long running freeze out of DePaul by Chicago Public School league coaches might be coming to an end. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/stats/_/id/4066345/charlie-moore

Could there actually be reason for me to be optimistic about DePaul basketball? I mean, beyond the blind fandom that was birthed back in the 80s when Clyde Bradshaw was running the point for the Blue Demons? Maybe.
As things stand now, next seasons DePaul roster will include five players that were ranked in the ESPN top 100 as high school seniors. The include transfer Jalen Coleman-Lands, former of Illinois, ranked #34 in 2015; transfer Charlie Moore, former of Kansas, ranked # 61 in 2016; transfer Caretare Gordon, former of St. Louis, ranked #75 in 2018; Markese Jacobs, ranked #84 in 2019; and Romeo Weems, ranked # 42 in the class of 2019. Also, transfer Darius Hall, formerly of Arkansas, was ranked as a four star recruit by ESPN in 2017, just outside of the top 100. If Moore gets a waiver, all of these players will be on the court next season, joining five returnees from this year's 19-17 win squad. DePaul's top two scorers won't be back, but the on paper talent level has been increased greatly.
I remain cautiously optimistic.

Interesting they rank Joey Meyer the best. Meyer obviously had the best overall record, but arguably Joey just burned up 3 decades of capital in his early years and ran the program into the ground, from which it has never recovered.

Yeah, I would have went with Leiato. He left the program better than he found it, took it over again when it was in worse shape than ever, and at least has recorded a winning record in his second stint and upgraded the talent level for the coming season.

The Blue Demons added a very good late pick up as Nick Ongenda, a previous Western Kentucky 2020 commit, switched to DePaul and reclassified to 2019. Ongenda is a four star recruit per ESPN, and a three star per the other services. The Demons lost some size, so this helps.

Obviously, DePaul cannot give me a simple summer without terrible news as the program was hit with NCAA sanctions today. The basketball program will be on probation for three years, along with some self imposed recruiting limits. The sanctions relate to the recruitment of Levi Cook (who was a Titan recruiting target in the class of 2019) and the actions of DePaul associate head coach Rick Carter during that recruitment. Head Coach Leiato was not found to have committed violations himself, but was penalized for not promoting an atmosphere of compliance. He is suspended for the first three games of the upcoming season. Rick Carter was a guy who I had once considered a potential future Titan coach. He has a lot of ties to Michigan and formerly worked under Tom Izzo. He had a lot of Michigan AAU connections. He left DePaul abruptly back in 2018, under mysterious circumstance, and left coaching completely. Rumors were that he had a bad relationship with the head coach. Apparently his actions in this situation led to him leaving, and DePaul self reported these issues to the NCAA shortly after. www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/ct-depaul-dave-leitao-suspended-20190723-hvpgxm4qifhulf2jonycihqmtm-story.html
