Seriously, what is going on at Oakland. Rivalry aside, I hate to see a conference team struggling with retaining and getting players.

My guess is that the juco guy saw Cumberland and Norris leaving, perhaps read a couple stories or even the OU board, and began to rethink it. These things are contagious.

Seriously, what is going on at Oakland. Rivalry aside, I hate to see a conference team struggling with retaining and getting players. Most mid-major teams go through cycles. A lot of it results from the experience level of its personnel and the strategic recruiting decisions made by the coaching staff. IMO, Oakland made a concerted effort to compete strongly out of the blocks in the HL by bringing in a lot of transfers. And it worked as far as it went. But that strategy left a hole in the depth chart because not enough of Oakland's HS recruits panned out for various reasons. In fairness, injuries to Neely and Beck reduced their effectiveness. They are now at the beginning of a rebuild cycle - similar to what we faced after the 2012-13 season when Ray, Jr. went pro and Jason Calliste grad transferred to Oregon. Plus there were murmurs of discontent with Ray as coach similar to the questioning of Kampe by many of Oakland's fans. And questions about the university's commitment to its athletic department - similar to what we have endured at various times since the Vitale era ended. Loyola (Chi) is also experiencing a similar issue after making the final four a year ago. Butler and Creighton are also experiencing an ebb in their programs' fortunes after great runs in the Big East. And St. John's is another team that has faltered and finds itself hamstrung in an effort to find a new coach without a $2 million buyout clause in his contract. The issues are also similar to those faced by smaller market pro sports teams like the Tigers and their rebuild after their window to win the World Series ended. Quite frankly, with the rise of YSU and the potential of Milwaukee next year coupled with our hopeful improvement, the HL might be a stronger conference next season than it was this year. The fact that NKU and Oakland may be down does not mean the conference will be weaker. Of course, given the new free agency system in college basketball, it may take us until July to fully understand how the roster changes on each HL team (including Oakland and us) could change their relative positioning in the conference. In the meantime, another fan base is learning that karma can be a bitch - even in Auburn Hills.

Article in Irish Sports DailyBraden Norris didnât get a ton of recruiting interest coming out of Ohioâs Hilliard Bradley High School a year ago, but itâs coming now. âIt feels great,â Norris said. âYou work all your life for opportunities like this and when they finally present themselves, itâs a great feeling.â Norris is in the process of transferring after a successful freshman year at Oakland University when he was named to the Horizon Leagueâs All-Freshman Team. Since entering the NCAA transfer portal late last week, Norris has heard from Notre Dame, Ohio State, Butler, Richmond, Wright State and Morehead State. âObviously, that doesnât mean you stop working by any means,â he said. âIâve always had belief in myself. Obviously, I thought I was underrecruited coming out of high school, but thatâs what happens when youâre 5-11. Iâm just happy Iâm getting these opportunities now and these schools are showing interest in me. So far, itâs been a very exciting process.â The process included a visit to Notre Dame this past weekend. âThey were kind of the first ones to contact me Friday after I went into the portal,â said Norris. âThey were definitely quick on the move. They had me up Sunday and it was a good visit. âIt went really well. I really enjoyed it. Coach (Ryan) Ayers took me around campus and showed me around. Iâd been up there before, but was able to take a deeper look into it. I met with the guys, played with the guys a little bit.â Norris, who started 30 games in one year at Oakland, averaged 8.4 points, 5.2 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting over 48 percent from three-point range. He said he felt good getting on the court with the current Irish players. âI think I played well,â he said. âPlaying with those guys in that type of offense with those kinds of players makes the game easier for me too. To find those guys, they can all shoot it. (Prentiss) Hubb can obviously make a lot of plays for teammates. It was really fun playing with him. I think I had a good experience playing with them and it was definitely fun.â Norris plans on keeping in touch with the Irish. âI think theyâre going to continue to show interest,â he said. âObviously, from my end, it would be great to get an offer from them, but obviously, I know itâs a business and they have to make decisions. If they offer, theyâre definitely one of my top schools without a doubt. Hopefully, they just continue to show interest and maybe pull the trigger.â Norris doesnât have a firm timetable for a decision just yet. âObviously, when I went to Oakland, I wasnât planning on transferring at all,â he explained. âThat wasnât my intention when I signed there. Things didnât work out, so I did transfer. I want to get this decision right because I donât want to transfer again. Iâm not in any rush, but I do want to know where Iâm going to be for the next four years if that makes sense. âIâd say sooner rather than later.â

After only getting an offer from Samford, Daniel Oladapo has changed his mind and recommitted to Oakland. This time he really means it.

This OU off season sure has been something. This being the latest saga of a player clearly feeling he's settling to become a Pioneer, following his short stint of being out and playing the field for a bit.

We dont know, but the most probable reading to me is that he saw the apparent chaos and thought maybe he'd committed to a bad situation--then he talked to kampe and got back on board. Meanwhile, let us remember that most Horizon--indeed most mid-major--recruits are "settling." Most of them will take the P6 offer if they can get it. And they'll take any A10 offer before the best Horizon offer. Absent special circumstances--coach's son, for example--that's the norm.

Days later he de-committed. A few days later he re-committed. A most unusual start to his career at Oakland.

What's that a picture of that he tweeted out? I only see lights reflecting off of something, and there are what appears to be grade school stands in the background...
For whats its worth - Tony Paul tweeted out yesterday that Cumberland isn't for sure gone and leaving option open to return to Oakland. Meanwhile their message board has talked themselves into saying they'll be fine next year no matter what.
