That's strange. Why so late? Newman wasn't nearly as good for OU as I thought he might be, but he wasn't bad, averaging almost 23 minutes and over 9 points per game. With Cumberland leaving, the #2 guard spot was presumably his (point guard Norris leaving, and end of bench shooting guard Stan Scott leaving, also left vacant backcourt minutes). They've got two freshmen guards coming in, but neither look like top players that are definitely going to shove Newman aside. Plus, unless he's graduating in 3 years, or gets a waiver, he'll have to sit, thus losing a year of eligibility since he sat a year when he transferred from George Mason to OU. One speculates if there were academic or other issues that arose late. Or maybe they've got some hotshot grad transfer coming in late. Or maybe, like Isaiah Brock, he just decided he doesn't care anymore about D1 ball. He could play immediately at an NAIA school, still have a full athletic scholarship, and not have the rigors of the D1 athlete's life. Anyway, it's very interesting, and another blow to an OU squad that looked like a top HL contender.

Really strange off season for Oakland. Bunch of transfers. A JUCO commitment, de-commitment, re-commitment, and then re-de-commitment. Newman's transfer is strange due to both the timing and the circumstances the Commissioner stated above. If we had a local media that actually covered mid major basketball, there would seem to be a story worth exploring there.

The JUCO, Oladapo, who committed, decommitted, re-committed, and re-decommitted, has now committed again. This time, he really, really, really means it.

Ever since Newman transferred to OU, I was concerned he would turn into a real good HL player and ultimately a Titan killer. He had a decent but not spectacular first season with the Pioneers. Agree with other sentiments that its an odd turn for his career to bail at this point in his career, and in the calendar year.

There's an interesting article on Midmajor Madness about Oakland and Kampe: "Transfers have hit Oakland hard, and coach Greg Kampe is not holding back" It also has a link to an extended podcast interview with Kampe. There is certainly a case to be made against the current transfer environment, but Kampe is not a very persuasive spokesman. Basically he feels that players should feel greater loyalty to their teammates and their schools, and that the ease of transferring is not analogous to the "real world." (Kampe's opinion may be behind the times as indentured servitude largely disappeared from the real world a century ago, but that's just my view.) Kampe also plans to be around Oakland for some time to come, 10 or 15 years. He thinks that his team's overseas trip to Greece this summer will come at an opportune time with so many new players on board. He believes Oakland will still be fine with all of the roster turnover, "next man up." www.midmajormadness.com/2019/6/10/18651122/oakland-grizzlies-greg-kampe-transfer-portal-jaevin-cumberland

Article from Oakland Postonline about state of roster. After several transfer announcements over the summer, the men's basketball roster will be finalized in July. Michael Pearce, Sports Editor JUNE 19, 2019 After watching their season end on a last-second shot, Oakland fans had one collective thought regarding the future — “Everyone is coming back.” That thought was reinforced when graduate seniors Brad Brechting, Xavier Hill-Mais and Jaevin Cumberland took to the official website of the Golden Grizzlies to announce their intent to return. “Jaevin, Xavier and I came in with each other and started something that will never split us apart,” Brechting said on goldengrizzlies.com. “We love Oakland and it is our family. We have unfinished business next season and are determined to complete our mission.” It came as a shock to most when a month later, it was announced that Cumberland and first-year standout Braden Norris were both transferring. Both have since landed at different programs. Cumberland will be teaming up with his cousin Jarron at Cincinnati, while Norris is headed to Loyola University in Chicago, home of the Ramblers. When Karmari Newman announced his intent to transfer as well on June 10, the total Oakland players to transfer in the last 9 months ballooned to six. Stan Scott, James Beck and Brailen Neely all transferred as well, with Neely moving to Wayne State in October of 2018. The transfers of Beck and Scott were expected by many, but for Head Coach Greg Kampe, the most shocking one was the departure of the fifth-year senior, Cumberland. “I knew that all three of those guys [Brechting, Cumberland, Hill-Mais] were being recruited behind the scenes by places — it’s not legal, but it happens,” Kampe said. “I called them in and said ‘If you’re going to leave, I need to know now so I can replace you’ and all three said they weren’t leaving.” The press release was then put out in an attempt to discourage other schools from looking at the three cornerstones of the team. Norris leaving was a shock to most as well, and Kampe still has no real idea why Norris decided to transfer. The reasoning Kampe received was that the freshman was “searching for a better opportunity,” which Kampe felt “made no sense at all.” Oakland has been one of many mid-major schools over the past few years to get hit with the transfer bug. The recent implementation of the new “transfer portal” has created a sort of free agency for a college prospect, where they can enter the portal and explore any and all options available to them. In the past, Kampe has never tried to take a team’s best player off of their roster. Instead, he has tried to make Oakland a landing spot for players who had issues at their first school or weren’t getting consistent playing time at the high levels. Now, Kampe is adopting an “if you can’t beat them, join them” mentality. “We’re going to stick our nose in it [the transfer portal], and if there are good players there who want to come to Oakland, we’re going to take them,” Kampe said. “You can fight it or you can adapt, and I think that part of being successful in life is adapting. Oakland is going to have to adapt to be successful.” Recruitment is still ongoing, and the roster will be finalized come early July, as the team will prepare to compete in a tournament in Greece in August.

Not sure if he's considering transferring in, or just working out there It would probably be a great spot for him--with Norris, Newman, Cumberland, and Scott all leaving, OU needs guards and needs 3 point shooting. I don't know if HL has any rule that might limit transfers within the league. I can't recall offhand a direct HL team to HL team transfer in the last decade. At least one poster on the OU board says he is transferring to OU.

Would be nice if Detroit Mercy could work a similar deal with Michigan. The seasons OU-MSU is played at the Breslin, the Titans and Wolverines could play at LCA.
