UIC to MVC announcement will be broadcast on ESPN+ at noon tomorrow (Wednesday, January 26). Hope the Titans can give them a nice departing gift on Thursday as part of their farewell tour.

I don't know what he's saying here or if I agree. I'd think teams 6 thru 11 play a play-in round. In the next round, 4 hosts 5, 1 hosts the winner of 8/9, 2 hosts the winner of 7/10, and 3 hosts the winner of 6/11. Unless they reseed the winners of 6 thru 11, highest remaining to lowest with 1 getting the lowest remaining, and so on....

The other six teams (sans UIC) would play each other in the first round, the three winners joining the top five in the quarterfinals. That 5th place could well be UDM. I had heard just after the MVC announcement that UIC was on okie-dokey terms with the Horizon and the Flames would be allowed to play in the tournament, perhaps there has been a change of mind/heart.

When they move to the Atlantic 10 a decade from now, I'm sure UIC will remember not to officially announce it until after the spring sports season is over.

Looks like it's happening: I agree with the ban. Why would you have a school represent you who is no longer with you. If they do represent the conference they get a larger share which also would be better going to a member. If U of D was leaving I would be alright with the same call. Fact is the Flames would make a weak representative in most sports.

Horizon League statement re: UIC. By-laws say that to be eligible, UIC had to give the HL one-year's notice. UIC asked for a waiver. HL denied it.

UIC doesn't like losing the waiver appeal.

I just watched all the speeches at the Southern Indiana to OVC press conference, seemed like a wedding celebration of love that will last “until death do us part.”
The UIC and Horizon developments of the last couple days seems like stuff of divorce.

This sucks if you're an impacted UIC athlete who did nothing wrong, same as it sucked that U-D basketball players (who did nothing wrong) were ineligible for the Horizon Tourney because of a delayed handout of an Academic Penalty that pre-dated their matriculation. In reading the Horizon League release on the topic, there is just one difference: in UIC's case, the reason for the penalty is the decision (and quick league departure) that was decided on by your school administration. In U-D's case, it happened because of a delayed decision by the NCAA (our involvement was hiring/firing coaches a few years earlier that resulted in too many players leaving the program all at once).
This might sound cold, but I don't really care about the other Horizon League members anymore. We need to worry about our school first and use this League as a stepping stone to a better league. That's it. Example: UIC has traditionally the strongest softball program in the Horizon, by a wide margin. If their absence allows us to win a softball championship this spring, I say Go Titans!

UIC knew what the bylaws said, and were in a position to weigh the pros and cons of a quick exit. They could have negotiated something different in writing prior to formalizing the decision to leave the Horizon, but chose not to. In a real sense, you could make the argument that they threw their own current students athletes under the bus. Probably promises of a couple free Chicago-style pizzas delivered to HL headquarters would have been sufficient to lock in the bylaw exemption they should have sought and secured.
