Thought I'd start a new general thread for another conference some Titan fans talk about wanting to join (and one we were once in), the Missouri Valley.
My immediate note was to congratulate Northern Iowa for snagging a home game this year with North Carolina. UNC's Marcus Paige went to high school near UNI, and it's a 2-1 deal, with UNI at UNC the next two seasons. Still, given scheduling realities, a good deal for UNI, and with the Panthers coming off a 30 win season and expected to be good again, it's perfect timing. They'll get a huge crowd, and it's the kind of game that will their program on the right track.

It hasn't been all fun and games for Valpo in the MVC. They finished last in 2018, tied for 8th last year, and Athlon picks them for last this year. Their attendance fell from 3086 per home game during their last Horizon season in 2017 to 2722 in 2018, and 2611 last year.
My guess is that their fans are still pretty happy with the move.

The official MVC preseason poll went this way:
1. Missouri State 2. Bradley 3. UNI 4. Loyola 5. Drake 6. Indiana State 7. Illinois State 8. Evansville 9. Valpo 10.Southern Illinois
The Purple Aces were picked to finish eighth, but they have already racked up what will probably be the best win by an MVC team in the 2019-20 season; their road win over #1 ranked Kentucky.

Valpo is dropping their Crusaders moniker and stupid looking mascot. New name and mascot TBD.

Former Illinois State star Rick Whitlow passed away this morning after a battle with cancer. Rick was a personal friend of mine, and played for Coach Will Robinson at Illinois State in the 1970s. Rick's best season was his senior year, when he averaged 22 points while shooting an incredible 56 percent from the floor and 82 percent from the line. Among his teammates at ISU were Doug Collins and Detroiter Bubbles Hawkins. Rick went on to have a successful career in television sports and published his autobiography a few years ago. He and I became friends about ten years ago, and we shared many conversations about Coach Rob and basketball. Prayers and good thoughts for his family are appreciated. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/rick-whitlow-1.html

How about in the north, near big cities? If there is any chance that this is serious talk, the Titans should definitely be making their push, and trying to enroll old friends such as Loyola in the effort. Detroit as a market and recruiting area still has something to offer. UD has more long-term basketball potential than a place like CSU; and Murray State is a solid program but not exactly "near a big city." In fact, it's about as far as you can get from a big city. Also, the MVC currently has 5 privates and 5 public. Maintaining a balance had been a concern when Creighton left, leaving the league with just 3 privates before adding Loyola (and then replacing Wichita State w/ Valpo, bringing the league to an even 5-5). If the MVC went to 12, there could be pressure to take at least one private. Amongst privates, Belmont hasn't seemed to want it, though that may have changed; Bellarmine is too new; Lipscomb too Lipscomby; There's also Oral Roberts; and a number of state schools in CUSA that could be attractive enough to go back to a 6-4 public/private split. Is Grand Canyon too far for a private? I presume Dayton and St. Louis would say no way to leaving the A10.
