Couple of more bad losses for the Conference of Champions last night. UTEP spanked Arizona State, outscoring the Sun Devils 43-22 in the second half of a 76-63 win. ASU shot 58% on their two point tries, but totally negated that by going 1-18 from three point range. Bunch of teams and players are willing to die on that three point hill these days.
Montana rolled into Seattle with a 1-4 record and walked out with a win over the Washington Huskies, 66-58. Washington shot 8-19 from the free throw line and 2-12 from long distance. The Huskies have problems.
Incredibly, the best non-conference win for the PAC 12 so far is UCLA's victory over unranked Marquette.

USC beat Arizona State last night, after previously winning at Arizona. It's the first time that the Trojans have swept the Arizona schools on the road since 1985. Some dude named Wayne Carlander was the high scorer on that team.

Whoa. That's a big deal. My guess is that the NCAA has the goods on the program.

Final PAC 12 Standings for 2020-21
Oregon 14-4, 21-7 USC 15-5, 25-8 Colorado 14-6, 23-9 UCLA 13-6, 21-10 Arizona 11-9, 17-9 Oregon State 10-10, 20-13 Stanford 10-10, 14-13 Utah Utes 8-11, 12-13 Arizona State 7-10, 11-14 Washington State 7-12, 14-13 Washington 4-6, 5-21 California 3-17, 9-20
In the movie Edge of Tomorrow, a soldier claims, "Battle is the great redeemer." He could have been talking about the NCAA tournament. I (and a lot of others) spent much of the season beating up on the PAC 12, and with good reason. They had embarrassing losses and no signature wins in the non-conference. However, the league redeemed itself with a strong performance in the Big Dance, capped off with UCLA losing a close one to Gonzaga in the Final Four.
That got UCLA coach Mick Cronin at two-year extension at 4 million per year, thought 2026-27. That run came right on time for Cronin, as there were whispers that he might not be the right man for the job. Oregon State's surprise conference tourney title and run to the Elite Eight probably save Wayne Tinkle's job. Sean Miller might have been able to survive Arizona's NCAA troubles if he had more success on the court, but their recent underachieving resulted in him being fired. Bobby Hurley is feeling the heat at Arizona State, where his win/loss record had the fans longing for the days of Herb Sendek. I think Hurley's contract is keeping him safe for now. Washington had their second horrible season in a row, and the program is 9-29 in PAC 12 conference games the past two years. Mike Hopkins is on the hot seat there. Larry Krystowiak was fired by Utah after his not making the NCAA tournament since 2016.
The pundits say the PAC 12 will be back next year. But they always say that.

Stanford was rightfully excited about landing 5 star recruit Ziaire Williams, but the hype didn't translate into wins. Williams had a poor freshman year, scoring 11 ppg game with shooting percentages of 37, 29, and 80. The Cardinal lost seven of their last nine games, finishing at 10-10, 14-13. Because today's NBA is weak as watered down coffee, Williams declared for the draft and was drafted in the ten spot by the Grizzlies. This was similar to the situation with Josh Christopher at Arizona State, who struggled while playing just over half the season. He was still taken in the first round, despite ASU finishing a disappointing ninth place in the PAC 12. I'm not saying that programs shouldn't go after five star recruits, but not everyone is going to be Cade Cunningham.

Arizona State, which has had no problems recruiting under Hurley, landed a commitment from 6-10 center Duke Brennan. (Sounds like a gunslinger in a 50s Western. Makes sense that he's from Arizona.) Three star recruit in the class of 2022, he had offers from other PAC 12 teams. He was teammates with one of our targets, Malcolm Flaggs, who also committed to the Sun Devils. n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2022/duke-brennan-273864#school-interests
