In a discussion in another thread, there was talk about potential major college basketball events at Little Caesar's Arena. Titan Tar Heel provided this useful information about the efforts of the Detroit Sports Commission to bring in more events: "They are working on all kinds of stuff and are optimistic about the future ability to land more events (another Final Four? Super Bowl?). For a hoops related event in Detroit, we would need one or both of UM/MSU involved to headline it and thus be a focal point for other schools to want to be involved. MSU already has the Champions Classic, and they both have the Big Ten/ACC challenges pulling nonconf games."
I believe the LCA will be hosting some big events in the future. The NCAA wrestling championships held at LCA this past Spring reportedly went very well. Hotel space is sufficient now, and there have been improvements in the areas around the stadium and further North past the Wayne State campus. I think it's possible the City will host a Final Four, and the possibility of being an NCAA tournament Regional Site is high.
In addtion to that, I'd like to see an annunal event put on there, either a doubleheader featuring all state colleges (for example Michigan vs U-D, MSU vs OU) or perhaps an event drawing teams from out of state, like events at the Barclay's Center, United Center, and Gainbridge Fieldhouse. With Power Conference teams playing more conference games these days there are fewer opportinities for events like that, but I think there are teams that would like a solid neutral court game to build up the SOS. A Big East program like Marquette would probably like that kind of game, particulary as an addition to the schedule that is heavy on conference games further away from Milwaukee than Detroit. You might be able to get a West Virginia in from the Big 12 (Detroit is closer to them than most of their conference road games) and maybe Notre Dame from the ACC. Throw in Michigan or MSU and that's a solid four team event. Call it the Motown Showdown.
Thoughts?
And in a separate type of event, would you be okay with a double header where the Titans play the "junior varsity" game against someone like Kansas City, while a couple of Power Five programs, such as Michigan and Missouri play the "varsity game"? Call it the "Great Lakes State vs the Show Me State Battle".
I'm just spitballing here, but I love to see people and revenue coming downtown and events of those types would be good for all stakeholders. And I would love to see the Titans strengthen their connection to the City. We unfortunately had some very bad teams while the HL tourney was being played at LCA and couldn't take advantage.
