Thought I would start a thread on uniforms that may bring back some memories about Titan teams of the past. Here’s a warmup top I picked up many years ago. I am not 100% sure of the vintage, but believe it may date back to the 1973-74 season. I know Sam will like the logo. 4/2/20 edit/update: Based on a photo I saw recently, I believe this warmup dates back to the 1971-72 season.

Here’s a photo of a University of Detroit basketball jersey from the 1977-78 season I received as a gift many years ago (my brother found it on a second hand clothing rack at an east side Detroit sporting goods store). It’s meant to be worn out, not tucked in the shorts, which was an emerging fashion trend back then (since outlawed by the NCAA). This jersey was worn by Titan center Eric Agardy, and last year I had the pleasure of passing it along to his son.

Thanks for sharing that. I liked the "outside the shorts" jerseys worn by Detroit and DePaul back in the day. Would like to see them come back, but I don't see it happening.

If I knew then what I knew now, I would have bought a thousand of those spiral bound notebooks with the logo on the cover that the bookstore sold back in the 80s. Still got some in storage, but they are all full of my class notes.

Some may recall that the Titans got special approval from the NCAA to wear a close replica of this jersey when they played St. John’s and dedicated the court in Dick Vitale’s name. Marquette was the school that launched the untucked jersey craze. ESPN did a “30 for 30” feature about it some here might find interesting. www.espn.com/30for30/film?page=untucked

All in all, that was a pretty good day, especially with the victory.

Here’s a pair of Titan uniform bottoms from 1984 that would clearly be classified as “nut huggers,” a style the Urban Dictionary defines as “basketball shorts worn until the mid 80's, characterized by their tight form fitting properties in the testicle area.”

Short shorts and high socks. That was the style back then.

From 1918, these are sharp, great for a throwback jersey day.

Titan uniform from the long ago McCallum era when we had winning seasons, went to the NCAA, and the NIT. Robert Vowels fired McCallum and subsequently hired two losers. Yet, Vowels still gets paid over $200,000 per year.

Here’s another jersey from my home collection. It was worn by Mark Moore who played on the 1980-81, 1982-82, 1982-83, and 1983-84 teams. I also have the same team jersey worn by “Elve.” I have a vague memory of this player (first name possibly Brian), but I can’t seem to find a record of him on any roster. If someone knows what year he played, that would help pinpoint the specific season this jersey was worn. Also, if anyone has contact info for Moore or Elve, let me know and I will attempt to reach them to see if they are interested in having their old jerseys back.

Brian Elve is from East Grand Rapids. He spent a year at prep school in Virginia before coming to UD for 86-87 season. However, I cannot find any game statistics for him. He then transferred to Montana State where he averaged 9.1 ppg in 88-89 and 13.2ppg in 89-90. He later coached at Calvin College. He presently is Director of Guiding Light Recovery in Grand Rapids.
