2019-20 Horizon projections are starting to trickle out. The first human projection, Sports Madness, projects Oakland 1st (too high); the 1st computer, Bartorvik's T Rank, has them 9th (too low). Bartorvik didn't like OU a year ago, predicting them a too low 8th. He had the Titans 9th last year. He's got us 5th this year. I'll keep updating this as others come forth before the season opener on November 5. Athlon is the first national publication out. They've got the Horizon going: 1. Wright State 2. Northern Kentucky 3. UIC 4. Oakland 5. Youngstown State 6. Green Bay 7. Detroit 8. IUPUI 9. Milwaukee 10. Cleveland State
All Conference first team: Antoine Davis, Detroit (Player of the Year) Tarkus Ferguson, UIC Xavier Hill-Maas, Oakland Loudon Love, Wright State Darius Quisenberry, Youngstown State
Second Team: Brad Brechting, Oakland Jayquan McCloud, Green Bay Marcus Ottey, UIC Tyler Sharpe, Northern Kentucky Billy Wampler, Wright State
My sense is that Northern Kentucky is going to be ranked too high throughout the preseason. I think Wright State is the legit favorite, but the league is wide open. Early reports seem optimistic on Youngstown.

Lindy's is out:
1. Wright State 2. UIC 3. Northern Kentucky 4. Green Bay 5. Oakland 6. Youngstown State 7. Milwaukee 8. IUPUI 9. Detroit 10. Cleveland State
I noted that last year Lindy's had the worst pre-season all-conference pick: they predicted second-team honors for Oakland freshman Babatunde Sowunmi, who ended up playing 38 garbage minutes on the year. This year they've outdone themselves, picking Tyree Appleby for second team all-conference. No excuse--in their CSU preview, they note that he's transferred.
They've got Antoine as first team all-conference, and rank him the 43rd best player in the country (but they go with Wright State's Loudon Love for POY). They also put AD at the top of a little feature on "shameless" shooters who are the "funnest [sic] guys in the country to tune in for."
They rate the Horizon as the 22nd best conference, behind, among others, the MAC (11), Summit (18), and MAAC (21).

Street & Smith's is at newstands:
1. Wright State 2. Northern Kentucky 3. UIC 4. Youngstown State 5. IUPUI 6. Green Bay 7. Detroit 8. Oakland 9. Milwaukee 10. Cleveland State
Pretty superficial, with almost zero recognition of new players (freshmen and transfers) joining the league. IUPUI is rated too high, though in their defense, they went to print before Gardner was fired. Antoine first team all-conference. And I still think NKU is getting too much generally from these pre-season publications.
Finally, Street & Smith's they credit Wright State for the toughest schedule. That's a schedule that includes Central State, Urbana, Mississippi Valley State, Southern, and Tennessee Tech, all at home, just one high major (Tennessee), and only 3 true road games. In fact, the Raiders have one of the conference's easiest schedules.

The best of the national yearbooks, Blue Ribbon, is out. They've got it:
1. Wright State 2. Northern Kentucky 3. UIC 4. Green Bay 5. Oakland 6. Youngstown State 7. Milwaukee 8. Detroit 9. IUPUI 10. Cleveland State
They're playing it like smart money; put the three basket case programs at the bottom, in order of basketry, with last year's last-place team, Milwaukee, just ahead of them. WSU at the top is easy. NKU is overrated but they've been good and it saves having to guess. Safe picks up the middle.
Antoine is first team All-Conference pick.

College Basketball Central's Kevin Sweeney always gives a pretty good preview, thoughtful and detailed. He likes the Titans more than most, picking us 4th. He's got a few outlying predictions this year, including a dismal 9th place finish for Youngstown, and the first to get Cleveland State out of the cellar. His previews this year are shorter and less detailed than I recall from the past. But for one guy to preview all 32 conferences is quite a feat. cbbcentral.com/2019/10/16/32x32-2019-20-horizon-league-preview/

Detroit (253) 10. Cleveland State (312) kenpom.com/I'll add this to the list with other computer rankings at the bottom. Note that these pre-season computer rankings are worth even less-considerably less--than the opinion rankings. The reason is that they are based entirely on last year's performance and what is returning from that. They are set up so that by the end of the season (really a fair bit before then) the initial "placeholder" ranking has washed out of the formula. But as such, until you get pretty well into the season, they are essentially meaningless.
