The Penn State sports medicine doctor amended his initial comments. So TTH can enjoy his beers even more! From an ESPN reporter on Twitter: I'm confused. Are we celebrating that the final number of athletes with myocarditis was less than 35%? Just trying to ensure I'm aware of what to celebrate, being that I'm having beers tonight. Thx.

Here is a good summary of the scheduling options available to D-1 teams and the minimum number of games that can be played and still be eligible to play in the tournament.

I would think there is a good chance the Horizon-Summit challenge gets nixed for the 2020-21 season. An easy way for teams in both leagues to get down to the slightly reduced maximum number of games, and there will also be a desire to eliminate contests that involve more significant travel.

I may sound like an old fart when I write this but: Start of Practice = Oct 14. That's one day SOONER than what it always has been. When I think of the start of basketball practice, it's Oct. 15. And we are allowed limited basketball instruction after Sept. 21 which is MORE than it used to be. The only thing kids could do until Oct. 15 was conditioning with the trainers. No basketball coaching was allowed whatsoever. Start of Games = Nov. 25. That's when basketball SHOULD start. Why has the start date been creeping up every year? I remember back when I cared about Notre Dame and loved Joe Montana: I was watching an amazing ND-USC football game two days after Thanksgiving (ND's final regular season football game) that started at 4pm our time because the game was in LA. I was locked into the game -- it was a close, high-scoring affair and Montana was going nuts....and I had to leave during the 4th quarter because the Season Opener at Calihan was about to happen at 7pm on a Saturday Night. 7pm Saturday Night Home Game was (and still is) heaven on earth. Joe Montana vs. the Titans was an obvious call. Turn off the tube and get in the car. Calihan here we come.
Bottom Line: nothing's changed. Let's have a great season. Too bad we probably won't have our version of Midnight Madness this year. Go Titans!

In the late 60s, season opener was routinely scheduled for the first week in December. In 1968, the opener was held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. That, of course, was Spencer’s debut and the backboard smashing event vs Aquinas. As for start times, I believe tip-off was 8pm in those days due to freshman game at 6pm.

Tom, I watched the Titans practice the last two years during Homecoming, which is at the end of September. It was coaches running exercises and scrimmages, not just conditioning. I remember when October 15 was the start date, but that was before all these early-season tournaments. Shoot, the Titans' first game last season was Nov 10.

I should have written "...one day sooner than it used to be back when dinosaurs roamed the planet."
My point is: we can still have a full season. The first game keeps getting pushed earlier and earlier every seasib. We've added a few additional games with the exempt tournaments but really, what's the difference between a 27 game regular season and a 30 game regular season (and don't say "3 games").
We have to juggle and crop our early season schedule but God Willing, we will have a season and we'll get to participate in the Horizon League Tourney with a chance to go the Big Dance again. Go Titans!

Well, Tom, you did admit to being an old fart.
The first games can be the day before Thanksgiving. Detroit Mercy's school schedule is that students go home for Thanksgiving, take end-of-semester tests remotely, and then show up back at school sometime in mid-January. Long break in there, something like seven weeks. Which will be bad because there will be no students on campus for any home games for almost two months. But will be good because the players won't miss classes for almost two months.

If they are, there will be all kind of seating restrictions. For example, I fully would expect the Calihan bleachers to be closed.

These are the type of non conference scheduling opportunities that will be developing. Here, Louisville's coach tweets about a "Louisville bubble"
