Just read that three players have been granted their release to transfer from the Purdue basketball team since the season ended. Four players are leaving DePaul. At least three are leaving Pitt. Two are leaving Penn State. A website that tracks transfers says there are over 260 transferring in D1 basketball this year.
That seems like a lot to me. Are we seeing an increase in transfers across the college landscape, or is the internet making the information more available, giving the impression that there are more?
I am wondering if it's a product of the AAU culture, where switching teams is pretty commonplace.

I'd be surprised if there weren't more. I read that some place, though I don't recall if that was just anecdotal or based on real evidence. The culture is different. Transferring is much more accepted.

The number of transfers in college basketball this year is now over 350. Players seem a lot more willing to just pick up and leave if things aren't working out right away. It's their lives, so I can't fault them, but it's certainly a big change.
I do think part of it is due to the AAU culture, where you can switch teams multiple times in the same season.

Wow, the transfer list is over 410 this year.
Looking at it, the Penn State guys are still shown as available and there are other intriguing names on that list that I'd like to see as Titans. Go get 'em, Coach.

Transfer list is over 425 now. I'd be surprised if Coach Ray doesn't have at least one more transfer locked down for the Titans. Hopefully, it's a front court player, but we could use guard depth, too.

Couple of interesting pieces of information from the transfer scene.
Purdue forward Jacob Lawson is transferring to Appalachian State. That surprises me. I know he didn't do much at Purdue, only averaging 11 minutes, 2 points, and 2 rebounds in his sophomore season, but I thought he might have gotten more interest from other mid major programs. Then again, maybe he did and was just happy with App State.
Seton Hall freshman forward/center Kevin Johnson is transferring. Johnson reportedly had some attitude problems and only scored 2 points and grabbed 2 rebounds per game. He'll probably draw a lot of interest due to his high rating in high school and his size; he's 6-9, 240. I don't think Johnson is a Detroit possibility. He's from Compton and his last two college choices were Seton Hall and San Diego State.

I wonder if Steve Alford realizes how hypocritical he sounds: "They get unhappy and they're not very patient. They think moving is the answer." This from the guy who left for UCLA a week after he signed a ten year contract extension to stay at New Mexico.
I thought Waters comments were spot on. Team hopping starts before college. Heck it starts before high school in some cases. And you can change AAU teams as simply as changing your jersey.
I think the next thing we'll see is an increase in players backing out of verbal commitments. We've his it in a couple of high profile cases recently with Snider at Louisville and James Blackmon Jr. at Indiana. In the Snider case, particularly, that decision is understandable. Snider verbally committed two years ago, and since then Louisville has signed to point guards ranked higher than the four star Snider. Jacob Hammond is a 2014 center who committed to Oklahoma in fall of 2012 and de-committed a couple of months ago. And of course, on a smaller scale, we saw that with Shaq McKissic and the Titans.
You can't get too excited about those early verbal commits. :-)

Does it seem like we are seeing an increase in players announcing their intention to transfer during the school year? It seems like it. We've got the Chris Jenkins situation that we're watching, and others are popping up around the country, including the Stefan Jankovic dude that I hope the Titans looked at. Duke has a player announcing his intention to leave. I think as we continue to see more of these power programs signing these super loaded recruiting classes, we'll also see more and more players transferring. If you think you're good enough to play in the NBA, you're certainly not willing to sit behind guys you KNOW are good enough to play pro ball. zagsblog.com/duke/dukes-murphy-to-transfer/

Luke Fischer, a four star center from the class of 2013 currently at IU, is planning on transferring. He's not likely to end up as a Titan, but he will certainly be in demand.
