Yesterday we figured to get one competitive game and one blowout. That's what we got, but not in the way I expected.
#1 Baylor 78, #2 Houston 59
This one was over at halftime, with the Bears holding a 25 point lead. The Cougars scored the first basket of the game to take a 3-0 lead, but that was their one shining moment. Baylor made a couple of substitutions after a slow start and took control after that. Baylor is 27-2 after shooting 53% from the floor, 46% from three, and only 9 turnovers. They won the rebounding battle, and had 23 assists on 29 made field goals. That's what we call in the groove. Houston finishes at 28-4 with an AAC conference tournament championship to go along with the Final Four. Great season. (It's worth noting that Kelvin Sampson received a five year show cause penalty when he was let go at IU after violating NCAA rules with impermissible phone calls. Five years. On the other hand, Rick Pitino was basically hosting a strip club and brothel for players and recruits at Louisville and was back coaching Iona a couple of years later.)
#1 Gonzaga 93, #11 UCLA 90 (OT)
Great game, although I think the ending is getting a little too much hype. It's era of social media, though, so I guess it should be expected. Jalen Suggs hit a 40 footer off the glass as time expired in OT to give the Bulldogs the victory. I thought this game would be a blowout, but the Bruins would have made John Wooden proud with this effort. UCLA actually seemed on the verge of an upset on more than one occasion. This was actually a great game, not only because it was close, but because both teams played well. Both shot over 55% from the floor, and both committed only 10 turnovers each. UCLA had the chance to pull off the huge upset, but fell just short. Gonzaga, which put all five starters in double figures, is 31-0. The Bruins redeemed a disappointing regular season with an unexpected run in the tournament, and finish 22-10.
The championship game on Monday has classic potential.
