You can always count on the "U" to mess things up for its players and fans.
The attorney for the Life Wallet NIL effectively tweets "I can't do anything for poor Isaiah Wong and his agent. But if you fire your agent, I might be able to do something for you."

If you thought tuition was expensive now. Universities that don't have big donors are going to have to raise tuition to play this game.

The Wong saga is very interesting, if nothing else. Hard to blame the guy when Miami’s donor have such a great deal to the new transfer in.
Jack Swarbrick has been saying a major shift or reorganization of college athletics is coming in the mid 2030s when current tv deals expire. Personally, I won’t be surprised if the shift happens sooner and tv deals end up being a minor barrier that can just be renegotiated.

If you thought tuition was expensive now. Universities that don't have big donors are going to have to raise tuition to play this game. The universities cannot be involved in N.I.L deals. Yeah, but they are. Especially a school like Miami. No way that people on the athletics staff at THE U are not texting their biggest athletic boosters and saying, “hey, offer this kid all you can!” Totally untraceable. And you can bet your bottom dollar that those same boosters will get comped great tickets and even travel with the team on some charter flights. But the NCAA could never possibly police 350+ DI football and MBB programs. One - they don’t have anywhere near the bandwidth. Two, the courts have spoken and players have legal rights to NIL. Even if the NCAA could police some of the more egregious pay for play arrangements, they’d just get hit with more litigation, legal fees, and look like the bad guys in a society where denying money to predominantly African American athletes is a big PR nightmare.

This NIL deal opened the door to the next scandal in college basketball. Even worst is the advent of sportsbooks online. Remember if somebody pays a kid to make baskets, they can also pay the kid not to make baskets.

Yeah, I highly recommend the American Scandal podcast episodes about the Boston College MBB team in the 70s. It’s very well done. I sometimes wonder how many college players did similar things but just never got caught.

Update on the Isaiah Wong situation at Miami. Short version: "I didn't say that, someone else did, and even if I said it I didn't mean it." Says he's going to continue to play for the 'Canes.

Mole, it happens a lot when it blows up like in the 50's 60's and 70's they only get a hand full of players were implicated, in the 50's and 60's in was mostly NYC schools, NYU, CCNY, LIU, Seton Hall ETC, but other schools as far from NYC as Bradley, KY and Toledo had players involved. I remember years ago when the U of D played Memphis State who was ranked at the time, their star center Keith Lee, played so bad in that game he was lucky to hit the backboard on his free throws, it sure looked funny, I guess years later it came out that he shaved points in that game. There is an old HBO movie "The City Dump" that is about the CCNY team that won the NIT and NCAA in the same year that had most of the team shaving points, they played Bradley in both the NCAA and NIT final that year. It's been 70 years since then and CCNY has never recovered, nor has NYU>

NIL is allowing boosters to do what Sam Gilbert did for John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins, except now they are bold and out in the open with it.
The voices who raised concerns about NIL were drowned out by those who wanted it. It's a mess without order our regulation right now.

Actually, it's much worse, because with NIL, there are no compensation limits. With the old fake jobs offered by boosters, the pay for not showing up was at least limited to the relatively low wages that would normally go to people in such unskilled jobs.

Maybe the NIL is worse in that regard, but Gilbert did a lot more than just provide no show jobs.

That's a terrible situation and a bad sign for the state of college sports.
