This is interesting: raiderroundball.yuku.com/topic/3097/Horizon-League-Scheduling#.UgR1zRZ6tUQ " I was looking at George Mason's schedule and they posted the A10 rules as follows: 8.04 The following requirements must be met by all Atlantic 10 men’s basketball teams. The penalty for non-compliance is outlined in the Conference Constitution and Bylaws. A. Each men’s team must maintain a 1.8 average for all non-conference games schedules. The RPI at the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament of the preceding season will be used for the pre-season analysis and the current season’s pre-NCAA tournament RPI will be used for post-season analysis. The point values are as follows: Ranked 1-50 in the RPI: 4 points Ranked 51-100 in the RPI: 3 points Ranked 101-125 in the RPI: 2.5 points Ranked 126-150 in the RPI: 2 points Ranked 151-175 in the RPI: 1 point Ranked 176-200 in the RPI: 0.5 point Ranked 201+ in the RPI: 0 points B. Any Atlantic 10 institution playing a non-conference game against an opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC PAC-10 or Big East will receive no less than 2 points, regardless of the team’s RPI. C. Any Atlantic 10 institution playing a non-conference game against an opponent from Conference USA or Mountain West will receive no less than 1 point, regardless of the team’s RPI." Detroit's 2013-14 non-conference scores just 1.33. Here are last year's Horizon averages based on the end of the year, not including post-season. I've calculated 2 ways: 1 including non-DI games in the denominator, and one not. Non-DI games obviously show a weak schedule, but they don't factor into RPI, so if the goal is purely to boost RPI you might not calculate them.. A10 solves the problem by prohibiting non-DI games unless you happen to meet in a tournament that includes a non-DI team. All GamesDetroit: 2.10 Oakland: 1.87 CSU: 1.33 Green Bay: 1.29 Valpo: 1.23 UIC: 1.21 Milwaukee: 1.20 Loyola: 1.00 YSU: 0.93 WSU: 0.64 DI Games OnlyDetroit: 2.42 Oakland: 2.15 CSU: 1.67 Green Bay: 1.38 Milwaukee: 1.38 Valpo: 1.32 UIC: 1.31 YSU: 1.08 Loyola: 1.08 WSU: 0.69 The A10 calculates it both at start of season (based on prior year) and at end of season. You can fall below the threshold twice in a 3 year period without a financial penalty. More than that, and your share of post-season revenue gets dinged.

Youngstown State released its schedule today. 3 home games against D-III competition for the second year in a row. A home schedule of Warren Wilson College, Thiel College, Westminster College, Austin Peay, Robert Morris, Bethune Cookman and South Dakota can't excite YSU fans. But they do have a couple of marquee road matchups with games at Pitt and St. John's.
Also, San Jose State will definitely play Milwaukee at the tournament at Northern Illinois, and dates for those three match-ups are now complete.

Green Bay will open the season playing in the Inaugural HBCU Classic in Atlanta. What is the HBCU Classic? "The HBCU Tip-Off Championship ... will celebrate the athletic talents and achievements of current and past Historical Black College and University (HBCU) basketball players and coaches. This historic event will showcase the rich history and contributions of the HBCU culture." Because nothing says "rich history and contributions of Historic Black College and Universities" like the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Seriously, I think that's kind of good. The other participating schools are HBCUs, and there's something to be said for refusing to pigeonhole a celebration of HBCUs as irrelevant to white America. This should allow Green Bay to announce their full schedule shortly. They had been looking for a couple early season games but it sounds like everything else is in place.

As a Black man with many friends who attended HBCUs, I think it's good that the history is being recognized, and I'm glad it's not being limited to only those schools. It's a good thing all the way around. Thanks for the heads up.

UIC's schedule is out, and in many ways it is a good one for them. They've got a young team, and they get to start with 4 at home. Drake is their opener, a solid team and reasonable draw, then Roosevelt, a gimme win, then Eastern Illinois, then a game against crosstown Big 10 rival Northwestern that UIC can win. Thanksgiving week their players get 3 games in Florida against mostly mediocre competition in a tournament at Stetson. So it's not inconceivable they get out November somewhere between 6-2 and 8-0 with a very inexperienced team. December starts with a home game against SMU, a recognizable opponent, then their first true road game, at crosstown rival Loyola. They've got a couple of weak sisters on the road, Cal-Riverside and SE Missouri, and if they win those, with the road bonus for RPI those teams won't be RPI killers at all. They've got another D-III opponent in there, and then they close with their marquee match-up against Illinois at the United Center in Chicago.
Seems to me that's a schedule that can get a very young team off to a good start, has some good local teams in Loyola and Northwestern, a couple teams that play in solid conferences that should be good enough tests in SMU and Drake, and a big match-up with their Big 10 brother Illinois in Chicago. Lots for the fans to like.

USA Today projects Wright State to win the Horizon and be seeded #12 in the NCAA. www.hoopsworld.com/ncaa-countdown-no-52-wright-state?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ncaa-countdown-no-52-wright-stateSome nice words on the Horizon: Path to the dance: Winning the Horizon League tournament is the only route. The Horizon, while still a strong mid-major league, isn’t what it used to be when Butler was playing in back-to-back national championship games. But remember the Bulldogs didn’t win the league when they went back to the title game. This is a conference rich in history for strong NCAA tournament upsets. Conference outlook: Valparaiso was the top team in the regular season and tournament last year, but this year Wright State has a path to both titles. Still, there will be challengers. Cleveland State, which brings back Anton Grady, and Wisconsin-Green Bay are poised for strong seasons. And it’s impossible to rule out Detroit and Valpo.

Green Bay has released its non-conference schedule. Despite home games against Wisconsin and Virginia, it's an RPI killer, with an average RPI last year of 193. Personally, though, if we had Michigan and Virginia on our home schedule, I'd take it.

So here's a little comparison of Horizon Non-Conference Schedules, ranking each team's Home and Road schedules from (subjectively) best to worst. I've included games played near campus but at a neutral court as home games, marked with an asterisk. Similarly, road games played at neutral sites are marked with an asterisk. Our schedule isn't bad, when it's all said and done. We didn't get a big time home game like Wisconsin, MSU,Illinois, or DePaul, but we've got an A10 team and a Conference USA team at Calihan, and a good MAC opponent with whom I'd like to see us develop a rivalry in Toledo. And we've got two AAC and an ACC team on the road slate. That's better than a lot of mid majors.

The CBE ends up OK for Wright State, as they'll play @ South Alabama against South Alabama, Southern Miss, and Houston Baptist. The first two are among the better teams on their non-con schedule, which should be about finished up.
