For some games at Calihan, the official attendance number was inflated by a factor of at least two or three. I realize most schools fudge reported crowd size a bit, but I think UDM really pushed the envelope this year.

The boxscores for the Horizon tournament semis and finals I saw did not include attendance figures. It did not look especially good from my television set, I’m guessing less than 2,000. Close to the court it was pretty full, but after about ten rows it looked skimpy, end zones and upper bowl were virtually empty.

I went to the GB game at cali hall and than the NKU game and to me it appeared that the NKU game had at least triple the amount of fans at there game. It was also especially hard to get out of the stadium because of the amount of fans leaving let a lone the parking lot. I looked at the attendance counter for both games. It said at the GB game we had 1817 attended which I was scratching my head on that number (it looked like more in the range of hundreds of people ranging 500-700). At the NKU game it had 2177 which seem very believable (I would of guess more when sitting in the stadium). UDM might still be counting Reggie I think

The Horizon had better grab Bellarmine quickly. They would be one of the best programs in the Horizon. I watched their game at Freedom Hall it was packed. I think around 6000 and student body was really active. Made me think of Detroit in the good days.

Conceptually I like the idea of playing the tournament at a neutral site, but Bellarmine’s attendance number on their home court tells you campus sites hosted by the highest seed is probably the common sense way to go. NKU’s arena would have been packed last night if the Horizon had returned to that format.

UDM might still be counting Reggie I think I think that most NKU fans with tickets showed up. Most of our fans with tickets don't show up. However, I was surprised that NKU's end zone bleacher student section only had about 100-150 students in it. The school has an enrollment of 14,000. Most of the people in attendance at NKU were in the "alumni" and "fan" seats on either side of the court. The upper deck was empty. NKU showed that 2,000 fans can make a lot of noise when it reverberates off the concrete. It sure felt loud down on the floor in the 2nd half when they pulled away. If we could get back to the 2000+ attendance during Ray's tenure, Calihan Hall would be loud and intimidating. Of course, that requires aggressive marketing, strong follow-up with season ticket renewals, and little things like an up-to-date website with information about the specific ticket promotions for a game in public view for more than a week before the scheduled game. You just can't sit back and wait for people to call your office to buy tickets.

I believe our season ticket number this past season dwindled to only about 400. The Green Bay first-round tournament game was not part of the season ticket package. So even if “no shows” are counted for Calihan attendance in regular season games, I’m not sure how the box score figure gets so inflated. I take no comfort in reading this season’s attendance was “up 30%.”

I purchase 4 a year and didn’t attend a game. Right now the trip is +$125 in fuel costs alone.
