We are the University of Detroit with a simple red and blue bold print block D logo. To us, this is going back to our roots, to everyone else, we’ve never left.

What if the new president tied the renaming of the school to the University of Detroit to a $100M commitment by all alumni, friends and other donors of the university? Would it succeed?

I would love to see the name change, but I think the approach you suggest above would have bad optics. Better to be straight forward, i.e., state the case that the current brand is not working and admit that the best course of action going forward is to return to the “University of Detroit” moniker but also increase emphasis on the unique combined Mercy and Jesuit DNA of the school. This could be in conjunction with a major fundraising campaign but best not stipulated as a quid pro quo. Drop the “Building a Boundless Future” tag which is too generic and hardly used anymore and brand as “University of Detroit — educating tomorrow’s leaders in the Jesuit and Mercy traditions” or something similar.

This group is 55 years and older. The only reason I am including the age is because these are the last one's with the U of D diploma and emotions to the name. Time won't be on our side very long. I promise to make a donation to restore a tradition but not having it be tied to the name change. Its not all or nothing. I love handing down the name from one generation to another.

Yeah, "give us 100 million and we'll change the name back to U-D" is too much like, "give me a thousand bucks and I'll stop touching the hot stove and burning myself". Shouldn't have to be bribed into doing what's obviously in your best interests. I bet most of the Jesuits would be fine with changing the name back, particularly when the most apparent branding items would lead one to think that this is strictly a Sisters of Mercy institution. A change back to U-D with a secondary emphasis on equally touching on the Jesuit and Mercy connections would seem to be a good idea. Commissioner, what do you think of moving these posts to the Branding thread? Just for the sake of clarity.
