Pretty interesting read on Adrian College. If you don't feel like reading the article or don't have access behind the Freep paywall here's the quick and dirty... www.freep.com/story/sports/college/2022/04/15/adrian-college-school-division-iii-hockey-national-champions/7303379001/- In 2005 Adrian hired a new President. Enrollment had fallen from over 1,000 to just 850 - Sports was going to be a focus to differentiate Adrian from AL the other colleges out there...""I decided that there are lot of students who really would want to continue to play their sport or do a curricular activity like marching band, or student newspaper or even bass fishing," Docking said." - He immediately went to the Board to invest $30M into sports - and immediately spent $6.5M to build a hockey arena (Fast forward...the team has been to multiple Frozen Fours and just won their first ever NCAA championship) - Enrollment is now 1,850 - NCAA and Club Teams: Was 16, NOW it is 50 - Athletes: Was 230, NOW nearly 1,300 - Coaches: Was 50, NOW 78 I'm not saying UD MUST follow this, but it is an interesting model that demonstrates boldness - something that the folks at 6 and Livernois haven't been accused of since perhaps the 1920's when they decided to move from Jefferson.

Thanks for posting that article. I'd like to see the University of Detroit show that kind of forward thinking. I think it's safe to say that the administration hasn't treated sports (particularly basketball) like a potentially revenue generating asset since the early 1980s.

Somewhere between $6.5 million and $30 million to win a DIII championship. I wonder what it would take to win a D1 championship. Or are you advocating dropping to DIII?
And 1,300 of its 1,850 students are athletes? They added 1,000 students (850 to 1,850) and all those and more (from 50 to 1,300) are athletes? Or does that count intramurals?

Merely advocating UD does some kind of bold thinking at some point. In whatever flavor that looks like, academics, athletics or otherwise. And posted article as an interesting story and approach that a fellow small MI school took.

Here is innovative package I received from EMU this week: E-Club 2022 Season Ticket Package Starting at only $150, you'll receive: 1 Football Season Ticket 1 Men's Basketball Season Ticket 1 Women's Basketball Season Ticket E-Club Donation You can purchase multiple ticket packages should you want the ticket benefits for your spouse, partner or family. To purchase multiple packages, please call the EMU Athletics Ticket Office at (734) 487-3669. The Ticket Office can also assist you with location questions and other upgrade options/benefits. By upgrading your membership, you'll be financially supporting the E-Club and all Eastern student-athletes through your season tickets. You'll also receive donor recognition and a tax receipt from the EMU Foundation. Thank you for supporting Eastern Athletes throughout the years!I paid $150 for just the basketball tickets this year which did include the Women's games. I have not had season tickets for Eastern in over 30 years and I never attended EMU. I was once a member of the Huron Club which was their Titan Club before they were Eagles. Despite that, I am still on their contact list. They did at one time have a good game day experience for football. I wonder how many names we market to from that long ago?

I was involved in some of the construction when they first started upgrading their facilities. They had some problems but kept at it. It may have taken a long time to win a hockey title, but the increase in attendance due to the sports approach was quick. From the beginning the goal was to increase visibility and attendance. They were successful while remaining at the Division 3 level. IMO, chasing the brass ring in MBB under the new rules is a wild gamble. The new money and wide open transfer portal makes the chances to be a Butler, Creighton, etc. next to impossible. There are the top 50 or 60 schools and them there is everyone else. Does anyone think AD would have stayed 4 years under today's rules if he was not playing for his father...or even if he was playing for his father? The approach that would have worked at the D1 and may still work at DIII may not be feasible in today's rules, especially at a school of Modest means.

It goes beyond 50 or 60 schools that will prosper under the new environment, its location. The Detroit and St Louis of the world will have a problem competing for players, based on location, and will need to partner with sponsor companies like Gonzaga and their "gaming" sponsor. The Youngstowns may find staying in D1 impossible, without more government money.

I don’t know anything about our incoming president, but he’s going to look at the books and see $700,000 for a head MBB coach, $250,000 for an athletic director, and a ton of your athletic costs for a collection of losing teams. From a fiduciary standpoint alone, I think he needs to do a feasibility study as to whether UDM would be better off switching to DIII.

That's a good package. If I was still in the area, I would probably take advantage of it myself.
