From front page of this morning’s Detroit News: “University of Detroit Mercy leader reveals plans for Michigan's largest Catholic university” www.detroitnews.com/story/news/education/2022/08/17/new-university-of-detroit-mercy-president-begins-with-vision-we-need-to-grow/10165981002/It’s behind a paywall. Nothing in the article about athletics, although there is a mention that the new University president spoke to alumni at the recent golf outing. Found this quote interesting: “My assessment is University of Detroit is a really, really good school. ... I am interested in helping work with the institutions in the community to move us from really good to great.” A lot of Dr. Taylor’s priorities seem to be centered on developing programs and partnerships that will draw more students to campus. The article states that UDM’s enrollment increased from 4,875 students in fall 2017 to 5,227 students in fall 2021 but is expecting slightly less this fall, between 5,000-5,100.

I like Dr. Taylor's vision for the University. I believe he will do great things.

He said "University of Detroit"? I like the idea of partnership with institutions in the community. We've never done enough of that.

Yes, when the President refers to the institution as the “University of Detroit” you see the folly of the school’s current branding approach. On community partnerships: “That includes Taylor's envisioning partnerships with the business community to help grow the university's business school. He also sees continued growth by deepening relationships with health care providers and hospital systems, for preparing students for entry-level positions all the way to the doctoral level.”

But I am not optimistic that that will happen. I do hope that the partnership initiative is successful and beneficial to all parties.
