President Donald Taylor was a guest this past week on WDET’s “Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson.” No discussion of athletics during the 20-minute segment. Henderson spends a good chunk of the time pressing Taylor to get rid of the fence surrounding the McNichols campus. The show’s host and a sole caller-in refer to the institution as “U of D Mercy” throughout the interview, more antidotal evidence that “Detroit Mercy” continues to struggle as a brand. What a joke. We embrace our community and admittedly should work hard to do this even more. But we cannot remove the fence. It's an attractive fence that serves a purpose. There is no way our President could remove the fence and then if something happened to a student, how could he ever look those parents in the eye? Why does the City and some of its supporters find the fence so offensive? We are not a walled community by any stretch and never have been.

FWIW, when the recently vacated Administration building is torn down in the next year or two, it will create an opportunity for a bit of a green space that could help blend the western border of campus with Livernois. That, and getting something attractive built on the other side of the street, could go a long way in better integrating the University in the neighborhood fabric.

The recent news about how financially bad Taylor left Cabrini University is very concerning. Why did our trustees hire someone coming from a failing institution? Is he the best we can do?
