Davis Tabbed #HLMBB Preseason Player Of The Year, Titans Picked Sixth
INDIANAPOLIS (10/19/2022) -- The reigning Horizon League men's basketball Player of the Year Antoine Davis will start the season as the preseason favorite as the conference office released its preseason teams and coaches poll on Wednesday.
As a team, the Titans were picked to finish sixth with 268 points, but did receive two first-place. Purdue Fort Wayne and NKU were both tied for first with 394 points. Wright State (329), Oakland (321) and Youngstown State (291) were selected third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
If Davis were to repeat, it would be just the seventh time in Horizon League history a student-athlete has garnered the award multiple times and the second Titan to earn the honor twice after Rashad Phillips in 2000 and 20001. He is already a four-time First Team All-League selection, the first player in conference history to make All-League four times.
Last season, he led the Horizon League in scoring at 23.9 points per game, third in the nation, as he became the first player in HL history to top the league in scoring four times. He also led the league and was second in the nation in three-point field goals per game (3.90), the conference leader and fifth in the country in total 3-pointers (113), and topped the HL in free-throw percentage (88.2%) and three-point field-goal percentage (37.9%).
The CoSIDA Academic Second Team All-American also dished out 4.4 assists per game, third in the conference, and pulled down 3.6 rebounds with 28 steals.
Davis scored in double figures in the 29 games and posted 20 or more points 18 times, second most in the league, with a conference-best six 30-point outings, including a season-high 39 points at home against Milwaukee and on the road at Hofstra, the highest scoring mark in the conference.
The Titans are in the midst of practice and will open the 2022-23 season at home against Rochester on Nov. 8.
