There was a post on Facebook reporting that Gerry Cavanaugh has passed away. I haven’t seen anything official from the University as of 5:00 p.m. today. Fr. Gerry recently celebrated his 91st birthday but seemed in good health the last time our paths crossed on campus. A great supporter of Titan Athletics. Always wearing a smile, he was a beloved Jesuit and great ambassador for the University of Detroit Mercy.

There was a moment of silence for Fr. Cavanagh prior to tonight’s basketball game. He frequently came to games at Calihan Hall and liked to mix with fellow fans in the bleachers. A photo with Father from a 2019 soccer game:

RIP. He was always pleasant when I spoke with him.

That's too bad to hear. He was quite the legend associated with U of D. In another thread a few weeks back I mentioned how I sat next to him this summer at a luncheon we were both at. He was sharp as can be as we talked about a wide range of topics, including capitalism and such. He was also as kind as can be, as always. He helped make UD a special place.

From the online obituary: “Tim Hipskind had this to say about Jerry: … He would also go over to the Athletics Department at the beginning of the season and get tickets for the Jesuit community. Early on this was easy, but in recent years he had to do more and more persuading to get the tickets for free.”
