I posted this in the SEC thread on December 12, 2020: "Prayers up for Florida's Keyontae Johnson, who collapsed during the Gators matchup with Florida State today. At last report Johnson was in critical, but stable, condition at the hospital."
I'm sure most of us remember this. Johnson collapsed on the court in a scary incident, horrifying teammates and fans. It was during the height of Covid-19, and speculation ran rampant that his issue was somehow related to the virus. He spent 3 days in a medically induced coma. Doctor's diagnosed him with a condition called Athlete's Heart, which results from an increase in mass in the heart. Johnson finished the rest of the season as an unofficial coach, with his athletic future still in doubt. He stayed with Florida for the 2021-22 season in that role, stepping onto the court only for an honorary appearance on Senior Night. He then hit the transfer portal and with a clean bill of health, signed with Kansas State.
What's happened since then has been nothing short of fantastic. Johnson is playing incredibly well for one of the biggest positive surprises in college basketball. After sitting out for almost two complete seasons, Johnson is averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds, shooting 53% from the floor and 74% from the line. Kansas State has shocked the world by rising to the #7 ranking and an 18-3 record. Sometimes you get a real life story that sounds like a feel good movie.
In a weird twist, Johnson was recently featured in "documentary" called "Died Suddenly", which is based on the idea that thousands of young people are dying due to the Covid-19 vaccination. Johnson was actually cited as an example of one of these death cases, which is strange since he collapsed before ever getting the vaccine, and he's still, you know, alive.
Here's to hoping that Johnson continues to thrive and that the storybook tale continues. Stay healthy, young man.
