Tillman's decision to leave for the NBA opened up a scholarship for the Spartans for 2020-21. Coach Izzo awarded that scholarship to walk-on "Step Back" Jack Hoiberg, son of Nebraska head coach Fred "The Mayor" Hoiberg. Kid didn't really need help affording his college education, but I am sure it was a nice moment for him.

Some thoughts on the Michigan State 2019-20 season:
2019-20 was an up and down year for the Spartans, but it definitely ended on an up note. Despite another Big Ten title, the question of "what might have been" will linger. As often is the case, Izzo's crew was playing their best ball late in the season before Covid 19 shut everything down. The Spartans final record was 22-9, 14-6.
A trendy pick for the top spot in preseason polls, the Spartans suffered a blow early when SG Josh Langford reinjured his foot in the preseason, putting him out for the season. Tough blow for Langford and a tough blow for the team, as Langford averaged 15 ppg in the previous year. The Spartans would miss him all season.
MSU went 5-3 in the first eight games, losing to Kentucky, Virginia Tech, and Duke. No shame in that. An eight game winning streak followed, followed later in the season by a stretch in which the team dropped four of five. However, the Spartans closed out hot, winning their final five games with an average margin of victory of 12, tied for the Big Ten title, and seemed poised for another strong post season.
Cassius Winston cemented his name on the list of Spartan greats, setting all kinds of records and being the iconic leader MSU loves. Xavier Tillman averaged 14, 10, and 2, and left school to put his name in the NBA draft pool this year. Aaron Henry didn't have the breakout season some predicted, but scored 10 ppg. Freshman Malik Hall showed flashes, including a great game against Seton Hall. Rocket Watts, who has been mentioned on this board since early in his high school career, broke out big time towards the end of the season, averaging 14 ppg over the last seven games. It's not a coincidence that MSU went 6-1 in those games. Gabe Brown went from averaging 2.2 as a freshman to 6.8 as a sophomore, cracking double figures 7 times. He also shot 95% from the free throw line, going 36-38 on the season. Sophomores Foster Loyer and Thomas Kithier, both highly ranked recruits in the class of 2018, didn't have the same level of improvement, combing for six points per game on the season, although Loyer shot 20-22 from the free throw line.
I thought the Spartans were definitely bound for the Sweet Sixteen at least, with a solid shot at another Final Four appearance. Curse you, Covid-19!

Josh Langford expected to start for MSU today versus EMU. Good luck, young man. Stay healthy.

Eye popping stat for the Spartans: 53 assists on 60 made field goals through the first two games.

Spartan guard Josh Langford sat out the game against the Titans to rest his sore knee, but is expected to play against Western Michigan today.

Our team is so good that MSU's startling win over our Titans moved them up to #4 in the polls from #8.
