From Twitter: Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 30m30 minutes ago Michigan State's Ben Carter (knee) is probably a few weeks away from being cleared for full-contact activity, Tom Izzo told @cbssports. Grad transfer Ben Carter, who was coming off a knee injury, suffered another injury in practice. This looks like a big loss for the Spartans. "Michigan State's Ben Carter would have been a significant part of the Spartans this year. Suffered serious knee injury in practice, having surgery. Out for extended, undefined time. Doesn't sound good. Tom Izzo doesn't have a ton of proven frontline guys -- and Carter would have been a quality glue guy and given minutes as a veteran." Jeff Goodman, ESPN Insider

Michigan State beat Saginaw Valley State by ten in an exhibition game. Miles Bridges continues to put on a show during the preseason. MSU is missing depth up front, with Gavin Schilling and Ben Carter out with injuries. CJ Turnage scored twenty points for SVSU. I know CJ; his Dad and I played against each other in high school. www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/110216aac.html

Michigan State gets a commitment for the class of 2018 when Thomas Kithier commits to the Spartans. Tom Izzo deserves a lot of credit for building the Michigan State brand to this level. The Spartans get their second commit in the class of 2018, as Foster Loyer commits to Michigan State. I need to watch him again, because it's been a while since I saw him and I didn't think he was Big Ten good. I certainly didn't see him as a Scott Skikes type. Congrats to him, and good luck in the Green and White. Paul Biancardi @paulbiancardi 5m5 minutes ago Clarkson HS standout PG Foster Loyer ( @fosterloyer) just committed to Tom Izzo & Michigan State. A Scott Skiles type.

The Spartans dropped a home game to Northeastern last night, falling to 7-5. The article below gives a good account of the reason for the struggles, but the big thing is really #1 on the list: Injuries. The front court was not expected to be the deepest part of the team with the unexpected loss of Deyonta Davis to the NBA, but losing grad transfer Ben Carter and returning senior Gavin Schilling to injury before the season started really put them in the hole. Then Miles Bridges, who was living up to his preseason hype, gets hurt and has been out for over two weeks. Kenny Goins is a nice player, but he's not a guy you can depend on to carry the front court load at a high level. On the plus side, our old friend Cassius Winston is playing great. I disagree with the author; I think it's best to bring Winston off the bench. sports.yahoo.com/news/five-reasons-michigan-state-is-off-to-a-disappointing-start-this-season-194402197.html

The Spartans ended their 2016-17 season with a loss to Kansas in the round of 32. It was an up and down season for the Spartans, due mostly to injuries that kept a couple of probably front court starters (Carter and Schillilng) out for the entire season. Freshman sensation Miles Bridges missed significant time with an injury, as did shooting guard Eron Harris. It's a sign of the stature of the Spartan program that a season that results in a win in the NCAA tournament is considered a down year. The rich get richer, however, as demonstrated in this article on Spartan commits Xavier Tillman and Foster Loyer. michiganstate.247sports.com/Bolt/MSU-commits-Loyer-Tillman-roll-to-state-semis-51908249

Former Michigan State assistant Mike Deane is calling it a day, retiring as an assistant at James Madison, where he's been the last 5 years. He was an assistant at MSU under Jud Heathcote in the early 1980s, and from there got his first head coaching job at Siena. He made Siena a solid mid-major program, which they still are, and won an NCAA game there. Then to Marquette and later at Lamar as head coach. 437 wins as a D-I head coach.

Michigan State got some great news this week, as Big Ten freshman of the year Miles Bridges announced he was returning to college for his sophomore year. That's a big deal, because Bridges has been projected as a lottery pick by most, and as a first rounder by everyone. MSU is set up nicely next year, with all of their highly regarded class of 2016 returning, along with Tum Tum Nairn and a couple of other vets. The class of 2017 includes a five star big man and Xavier Tillman, and potentially Saginaw native Brian "Tug" Bowen out of La Lumiere. Also, Gavin Schilling is expected back after missing this entire year with a knee injury. Could be a special year up in East Lansing. www.freep.com/story/sports/college/michigan-state/spartans/2017/04/13/miles-bridges-tom-izzo-msu-basketball/100446300/

Front court depth was a weakness for the Spartans last year, but it might be a strength in 2017-18. Two players who were injured for all of the past season are expected back. Gavin Schilling is returning for his fifth year and former grad transfer Ben Carter was surprisingly granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. The Spartans also add two highly ranked frontcourt freshmen in the class of 2017. With Miles Bridges returning for his sophomore year, the Spartans will be one of the national favorites.

Nationally, Brown is ranked #86 by ESPN, a four star by Scout, and a three star by Rivals. Overall, a very solid pick up for the Spartans.
