In other words, they claim that they are employees of the university. If so, this raises a host of issues--notably whether athletes are "exempt" as salaried managerial and professional employees, or non-exempt, meaning they must be paid the minimum wage, overtime (for more than 40 hours/wk), etc.. There's also payment of unemployment and workers' compensation insurance. Presumably, the athletes are eager to pay income taxes on the value of their scholarships. No problem for the stars with big NIL income, but the 9th player in the rotation may not be eager to pay income tax on his scholarship, with a value in excess of $50,000 annually.
Meanwhile, I'm desperately trying to figure out why players are limited to 4 years of eligibility, and why they must attend classes at all. Gross violations of their rights as workers.

I haven’t thought thru this topic enough but…I don’t be grudge any of the kids looking at the situation (modern college athletics) and thinking it’s a bit messed up.
We are blowing up conferences and long standing regional revilaries so that…the university can make more money and oh by the way there’s a dam in place so the money can’t flow downward any further than the 7th offensive foot all coach to make a few hundred thousand. Everyone is mucking things up to make money for themselves, on the efforts of the kids who get nothing extra. Unbridled Capitalism, just as univ of Chicago taught (warned) us.
