The Verbal Commits website is showing a commitment from 6-11 power forward Michael Oaks. Saw him listed somewhere else as a 2023 grad, the VC site indicates class of 2024. Went to a Catholic high school in Houston. Appears that he currently attends Southern California Academy, a prep school focused on developing basketball talent. Also had offers from Costal Carolina and Robert Morris. verbalcommits.com/players/michael-oaks

It's been a while since we've gotten a good big, true low-post player. Welcome Michael Oaks!

He seems like a good recruit, moves well, good hands, I'd be shocked if he ends up here next fall.

Otherwise, I agree with you. Usually any high school recruit over 6'10 that can walk and chew gum at the same time ends up at a P5 school.

UP...why? He's from Texas, and unless MD knows somebody involved with Oaks, he's not coming here.

Isn’t it obvious that MD has a connection with someone seeing that the young man is from Houston?

I'm not yet so pessimistic about the program that I interpret every bit of good news as bad news waiting to happen.

Gabe Dynes isn't setting the world on fire, but his numbers aren't bad for a freshman in his first semester--he has played in all 8 games, averaging about 12 minutes a game, over 3 rebounds and 3 points, shooting 71%.

Is anybody a Center anymore? Oaks is a 6-10 Forward!! That's OK. It's a good signing - the kind we need and the kind that reminds us that building a Program requires bringing in some young guys and developing them. Never give up hope guys. As long as I am able to remember the name of my school (U-D, UDM, Detroit, Detroit Mercy, University of Detroit, University of Detroit Mercy ?)....or at least one of them....I will always believe that better days are around the corner

This is something that has been hoped for on the board often: a "developmental" big man with potential. He's not a reach; he had offers from other D1 programs. By the time he hits campus, he'll be more physicallly mature than most incoming freshman. There's a lot to like here. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do.
Kudos to the staff for getting a player who had other options. I'm not sure how they landed him, because it's not like the program has a lot of characteristics to sell that just draw players in.
As far as his position goes, I know that some players simply prefer to be listed as forwards because they think the position of center limits them in the eyes of college coaches. For the past several years the conventional wisdom has been pushing the idea that there is no room for centers in today's basketball.
